It certainly causes actual harm. Thousands of hours people spend in games to have it completely stolen away. I imagine the victims pay level x the hours required to achieve what was stolen should be at least the severity level of the cheating and punishment.

With most companies I have worked at - the Principal Title has been reserved for someone who fills multiple technical roles and is more hands on than a director with the engineering staff. That being said, the title "Principal" is also indicative that you are influencing multiple teams with your technical decisions.
Just my take on the situation. Don't focus too hard on the title. But what it is that you will be doing. This very different company to company.
