unless following an unethical law would in itself be unethical, then breaking the unethical law would be the only ethical choice. In this case cheating emissions, which I see as unethical, but also advantageous for the consumer, should have been done openly if VW saw following the law as unethical. Ethics and morality are subjective to understanding, and law only a crude approximation of divinity. Though I would argue that each person on the earth through a shared common experience has a rough and general idea of right from wrong...though I'm not always certain they pay attention to it.

When I had younger children, we would just pull them from school on occasion. This did require a bit coordinating with homework, teachers etc, but they don't have to be in school. On a more serious note, schools are there to serve you, be assertive about your children being yours, they do not belong to the state (at least in the USA).

Lol. For once being overweight may come with some advantages here.

huh...I always thought of the US as a republic with some democratic features. I mean that's why we have things like the electoral college. Your voice influences but doesn't not actually drive.

This is why pure communism is always a steaming pile as well. Who is going to fork it and feed and care for it? Sometimes projects succeed in the same way that road work eventually coalesces when a community needs a road, but many projects don't fit this mold and do much better with the drug dealer style of free for your first hit, then we charge you. Otherwise who is going to produce the stuff out of the wish to see a community do well without any benefit?

This reminds me a little of the original idea of a new winfs for longhorn from Microsoft except this seems like something that may become useful someday. Some interesting ideas...though shared object dependencies may be a problem...though I didn't take a very close look at they handle this. Perhaps all shared resources go into a specific location? Or perhaps everything is statically compiled? dunno ... anyway there is a reason behind our lovely file system mess. Kind of reminds me of https://www.joelonsoftware.com/2000/04/06/things-you-should-... though in open source land you definitely can take a risk like this.

The world is a wild place in reality. Life isn't really fair. Sometimes seeds fall on rocks or clay and will never sprout. If you set your sights on what could go right, things might go better for you. Life isn't about what happens to you, but what you actually do about it. As an individual, I can show the world I care by being somewhat responsible in my consumption, but I can't really control the rest of the world and their choices. If I did live in Bangladesh and I knew the ocean is rising in the next 50 years, I would consider other options.

you probably won't ever live in world where that's the base level: https://www.climate.gov/news-features/understanding-climate/....

I don't live in Alberta you insensitive clod, and while I said those things somewhat tongue in cheek, you can choose to be disgusted or learn to stop worrying and love the change.

No. See "Chicxulub impact" or more recently Mount Tambora. These are two of many examples.

As with most large scale changes...there are winners and losers. New species and extinctions. High CO2 is great for plants in my greenhouse...I suppose that's why it is called a greenhouse gas. Anyone longing for lower CO2 levels in our entire atmosphere is basically an anti-Canadian Agriculture bigot. Seriously though sometimes the cure is much worse than just handling the issues one at a time as we transition to a beautiful warm catastrophe/boon. Historically the planet has gone through all sorts of things before. Perhaps we should be looking more at how to successfully terraform our planet. Why are we still predicting weather when we should just be making it?

I thought this would kind of just be a pile of garbage, but I have to admit I was drawn in. There are some interesting novel pieces in Marsha and I am somewhat impressed with this project.

"...verify me" that wasn't easy, what I just did.
