By limiting the companies creating these models. Eg, you can’t create a model that produces nudity, gore etc.
> Harassing someone is already illegal.
> Should hammers be regulated because they can be used to bludgeon people?
Stabbing someone was illegal but we in the UK we still banned carrying knives in public. These things are not black and white and trying to frame them as such will get you nowhere.
Disagree completely. I’d much rather have a link to a trustworthy source than a random person writing “Tell HN: WhatsApp is down”. The post you think should be frontpage is useless imo. Take the time to link to a source instead of trying to beat everyone to the punch to get a little karma.
Most of the comments I've seen on HN have been personal opinions or legal questions rather than legal opinions. Copilot may be 100% legal - that doesn't make it 100% ethical (depending on your personal ethics).
If someone can use the tech to produce realistic images of someone they can use those images to harass and abuse that person. That’s a horrendous position for someone to be put it. I’d advise looking at some peoples stories of being the victim of revenge porn, upskirting etc. very hard to empathise after hearing those accounts.
You’re assuming these restrictions are enforced by others. That’s not necessarily true. If I was building these tools I wouldn’t want to know that they’d been potentially used to create content I ethically object to, and I would restrict them in such a way that I don’t have that hanging over me. That doesn’t make me the morality police, it’s me protecting myself. If you want a tool that allows you to generate anything without limits, build it yourself. Stop complaining about what other developers are choosing to do if you’re not willing to build your own product that sticks to your beliefs (that you likely haven’t fully thought through the consequences of).
Exactly! What features do we really need? Many “feature” suggestions I come across are people trying to make podcasts something they’re not so that they suit the person writing.
It's not like they did it out of spite or greed - both the EUR and GBP have plummeted against the USD over the last year. One area they could look at though is outrageous storage premiums. The price jump between levels is now a joke.
Anecdotally I see this with my friends who’ve had kids. A bunch of them all had kids roughly the same time (all within a year) and it’s fascinating how differently they all react. On the extreme ends you have one that nobody sees anymore because he has a child. On the other hand you have the guy that does everything he used to because, when possible he brings the baby, and when not his wife will take care of it (and he’ll do the same for her). What I’ve found most interesting is that the things he brings the baby to do (e.g. camping, or a music festival, the pub) are things the other guy would think are impossible. So I think a lot of it comes down to mindset and compromise (e.g. go to the music festival but stay in the family campsite and understand that you might not be able to get wasted but you’ll still have a great time listening to music and being with friends).
>> Last year I was in the UK visiting family and was unable to watch races there, despite havng already paid for them, as the geo restrictions were different.
Yep, thank sucks. You can thank brexit for that. AFAIK services offered in one EU country have to work throughout the EU (so if you were in Germany it would have worked). This meant that on holiday (coming from UK to Spain) a few years back I was able to watch F1 live on my phone via the NowTV/Sky app. This year - geo restricted.
>> You buy a bunch of iTunes movies in Canada, then move to the USA, and you no longer have the right to watch them anymore due to licensing.
Maybe this is true from the perspective of the license but it's not something Apple enforces through tech. For example, I have a two iTunes accounts for two countries. I can purchase content through both and use that content anywhere without restriction. They make it a big pain because you can't switch your account to a different geo after it's created but with multiple accounts your content isn't actually restricted.
Is it really skilled? I feel like it's just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks. You have an idea, write a prompt, and then edit and re-run that prompt repeatedly until you accidentally get what you want.
Legal or illegal, there's a big ethical debate to be had. Swallowing up the work of others and using that to generate derivative/new work that _a lot_ of people (I've seen half a dozen stock photo AI sites this week alone) are then trying to use to replace the original creators doesn't feel right.
Really? The clothes are my least favourite of the swag items. Send me it without the company logo and it's a great gift. But if I have to walk around looking like I'm in uniform then I'd rather buy my own.
>> > Pichai was asked, in a question that was highly rated by staffers on Google’s internal Dory system, why the company is “nickel-and-diming employees” by slashing travel and swag budgets at a time when “Google has record profits and huge cash reserves,” as it did coming out of the pandemic.
What is this weird obsession with 'swag' in tech companies? My company sends packs of it on a regular basis as a motivational tactic. It's generally not stuff I need, or want, it's wasteful, and there are much better ways the company could be spending that money (and the HR/marketing employees time). I've stopped adding my address to the list at this point when they ask for it.
>> At the moment, the only thing that really and truly matters is your wife/partner's health and your baby.
Maybe it’s just the phrasing of this and it’s intended differently, but it seems like terrible advice. You should never put your own mental health last. If you’re in a hole you’re not going to be able to help anyone else. If OP has just found out they’re having a baby they likely have some time. If they use that time to focus on themselves and get themselves in a better position they can be in a much better mental state to help when the baby actually arrives. The statement I quoted reads like the OP doesn’t matter and he should accept that. But maybe I’m not understanding your intention fully.
