Author here. Your thinking is equally weird to me. I value my time for sure, but isn't there a cost in not persuing what I'm genuinely curious about? What if a successful startup had come out of it?

By the way, this took place in 2011-2012, when Google Flights didn't exist.

You're absolutely right - the good old trial and error applies when it comes to innovation. There's just no way someone could come up with a breakthrough technology or product on their very first try. You absolutely need to be relentless at trying and testing out new things.

And yes, diversity of thought isn't nearly as valued as it should be these days. A team of people who all think the same about everything probably won't innovate as much as a team whose members can think for themselves. Just think about the early Paypal days (Peter Thiel, Max Levchin, Elon Musk, etc.)!

There's already a client-side implementation of Python in JavaScript. See: https://brython.info/

But it might not give you the sort of compatibility between the client and server code that you're looking for.

Everybody here is talking about PSP 5.0+.

But for me, the best version ever was 3.0. I was able to draw pretty impressive diagrams at the pixel level, without any problem.

In subsequent versions, they modified the zoom tool, the GUI and the brushes, so it was quite harder to do the same thing.

I'm currently experimenting with CodeMirror for one of my projects, and it shows that you spent a lot of time to refine its design and API. You did an awesome job, seriously.

I haven't tried ProseMirror yet, but I'm pretty sure that the same level of quality is there.

The more you practice it, the more comfortable, the more structured and the more natural you become.

I've been in Toastmasters for almost 7 years now. And it seriously changed me for the better.

Creating that site is a really cool move, and it will encourage other people to do the same.

I especially like the fact that they'll mount sensors for air quality on Street View cars. And the fact that they're using almost 100% renewable energy.

This is what I call leading by example.

The longer between your requests, the better.

If you generate a load greater than what a human would do, this might become problematic. A human wouldn't poke a website forever every 10-15 seconds.

The 10-15 seconds is more for web crawlers. Eventually, a crawler will run out of pages to crawl on a website, so it will stop sending requests to it.

Personally, I would stick to the 3 minutes delay. But it depends on what type of website you're scraping :)

The way it works was not immediately clear to me either.

If you go to her website: http://profane-justice.org/profane-justice.org/ (yep, you have to enter this weird URL)

At the bottom, it's stated that if you copy anything, you enter into a contract, and that for each page copied, you owe her money. This is how it works.

I don't think that such clauses are common on websites, probably because:

  1. People don't know that they can do that.
  2. People don't have the patience, energy and financial resources to sue everyone copying things from their personal websites.

So yes, you could put something like this on your website. But let's be honest, this isn't good for the "free" and "open" internet that we all want.

I guess that we see things differently.

On one hand, you see the economic value of airlines, cars and factories, so for you it justifies the environmental consequences that they have. Fair enough.

On the other hand, you don't see the economic value of asteroid mining and of getting things into space, so you talk about the consequences that it might have on the environment.

Did you know that asteroids represent an endless supply of rare metals (gold, platinum, etc.)? Take a look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asteroid_mining#Purpose if you don't believe me. This might represent the biggest economic opportunity of all times. And if we want to become a "multi-planetary species" as Elon Musk suggests, this will probably be essential.

Now, I personally tend to be more on the environment's side. So as long as we use those metals to build things on other planets and in space, I don't see any problem. We'll need to be responsible with this.

Elon Musk has already said that burning fossils fuels and pumping it into the atmosphere is the "dumbest experiment in history".

So I guess we've just found the second dumbest one. I just can't understand why some people think that this is a good idea.

What do you think creates more pollution between:

  1. All airlines in the world.
  2. All cars in the world.
  3. All factories in the world.
  4. All rockets in the world.

Right now, I think that 1, 2 and 3 combined have much deeper consequences than 4.

Good to know! My only experience so far with Cython comes from lxml. It's a weird language that seems to have a lot of corner cases, though. Just like C++/CLI.

There are indeed many interpretations of what a memory leak is in Python.

In C/C++, you can forget to free memory, thus causing memory leaks. For example, you may call malloc(), but forget to call free(). In Python or Java, you can't do that; you don't need to explicitly "free" objects, as there's a GC.

Sure, you could leave rogue Python or Java objects in memory, but in my mind this isn't a "leak" in the same sense as a leak in C/C++. The Python interpreter (which is written in C) or some C extension may themselves cause real leaks, though.

I'm the author of the post. Maybe my reasoning was not explained clearly enough.
