I find it fascinating how some of the early Zionists explicitly described Zionism as a colonial project, complete with the Palestinians as natives. https://youtu.be/3xottY-7m3k?si=qCdgPb8UtSFor3qV&t=1205

The last press conference today from the US Coast Guard stated that the evidence (debris spread over an area hundreds of meters away from the Titanic) is consistent with the catastrophic failure occurring somewhere in the "water column". So current evidence points to it occurring during the descent.

Read Cal Newport’s Digital Minimalism. If you’re like me, you’ll substitute one digital addiction for another when trying to give up something; his book is helping me to break that cycle. Products like YouTube and most social media are finely tuned billion dollar machines aimed at capturing and holding your attention; our fleshy brains require more than a simple detox to break that grip.

I love how Signal (and WhatsApp adopting Signal's protocol) made privacy easy for the general public and technically inclined alike. Privacy will never be the default until it's made easy.

I'm guessing some folks won't like use feature because it's too "social media-y" (myself likely included) but as they say in the post:

- You can turn the feature off and you won't see other people's stories

- You can choose the audience and the max you can share it with is with Signal users in your contacts list

Thank you Signal team for giving the general public what they want and making it private.

First I've heard of this project. Though I don't have a use for it yet, it looks cool. Keep up the good work!

If you can learn to differentiate between what you want and what you need, you'll be a lot happier.

Being quiet in a taxi is perfectly normal. Barking orders at them, complaining that they're not going fast enough, treating them as beneath you, etc.: those are rude.

In my experience, it's not the scientists (NASA or JET in this case) that utter such statements but journalists. NASA scientists will say something like "we've encountered something new, but we're not jumping to conclusions until we've investigated fully" and then you'll see some bloggers/journalists putting out clickbait titles like "Possible alien life discovered on Mars!"

In this case, the celebration seems well-reasoned. From the article:

"It's a landmark because they demonstrated stability of the plasma over five seconds. That doesn't sound very long, but on a nuclear timescale, it's a very, very long time indeed. And it's very easy then to go from five seconds to five minutes, or five hours, or even longer."

A bold idea! Whether it succeeds or not, it'll make for a terrific experiment.

Seems their plan is for public posts to be $1/post but "Posts among friends will always be free."

I imagine if they become successful they can look into lowering the public post price depending on a person's region. Let's leave aside how they'll go about determining that, VPNs, and such; that's something for the future.

This is really cool. I have 7 tabs of quirky barely known websites open after maybe less than 5 minutes of interacting with Marginalia. This is so much fun!

While calling mental health facilities to get advice on a similarly mentally ill individual (homeless for probably decades, delusional speech, probably paranoid schizophrenic, afraid of authorities and equally resistant to treatment...no drugs or alcohol though, so that was nice) two of the people I spoke to said the only way they could reasonably see the person getting help was if I called 911 or the police and told them I was worried they were a threat to themselves. That was the only way to get them forcibly treated. One of them said this based on her own experience in trying to get help for a family member. So I did.

Depending on your city/state, they may send out a mental health specialist. Mine didn't have any available so the police called me and gathered the required information. It was the middle of winter and this individual steadfastly refused to go to a homeless shelter and had a respiratory illness, so it was easy to make the case he was endangering his life. The officer was friendly and explained that if they did find the person to indeed be a threat to themselves, they would be taken to a mental health facility if beds were available. In this person's case, turned out he had a warrant out for his arrest. Part of me felt bad that he went to jail, but the other part was relieved that he was out of the cold. Unfortunately, he fell through the cracks and doesn't seem to have been given mental health treatment during his time there.

Fast forward a few months and I got a call from him. He had made his way to some city in Arizona. He went to a hospital there for some unrelated illness; they quickly realized he was mentally ill and after an evaluation committed him against his will. I hope he gets better.

Hey OP, to go off what lhorie said:

1. Does the company actually know what your open source project does and how they want to fit into the company's product?

2. Agree with lhorie that an interview consisting of 4-5 sessions of 1-hour each is typical in big tech companies based on my experience. Keep in mind they're not interviewing you for your technical chops alone which your open source work has already proven; they're looking at whether you'd fit in socially (which is pretty easy in my experience: be polite even when disagreeing with the interviewer and don't come across as an axe murderer and you'll be fine).

An alternative you might consider proposing to them is for the company to hire/sponsor you to continue working on your open source project with the agreement along the lines of:

1. you'll be adding features to better fit their needs

2. you'll help them plug your project into their product as needed

Have you compared similar font sizes on different monitors? I’ve realized monitor quality makes a big difference when reading text for hours on end. Some produce very sharp text, others not so much.
