Using Arch probably allows for faster updates, since Steam won't have to wait for ages to use some of the newest Linux kernels. Same goes for other supporting software.

Ubuntu is good as a stable platform, but it's probably too slow moving.

1€ ~= 1.18$ US So, probably not just a conversion thing

> I just can't conceive of how modularity, in general, causes duplicate code rather than reduces it.

Yeah, like my node_modules folder doesn't contain tons of duplicate code.

Don't play multiplayer games on Linux.

That's true if one only talks about one person using an extra 200W. But it matters when it's about millions of people using an additional 200W.

No, the obvious solution is paying a monthly subscription to use a cloud-based computer for such high-intensity tasks like web-browsing. We should all be using https://www.mightyapp.com!

It's not a chicken and egg problem. It's Apples fault/intention.

They had really bad support for OpenGL and wanted developers to use Apple's Metal API. But developers stayed on DirectX (Windows-only) or OpenGL/Vulkan for Linux/Windows/Android crossplatform. It just wasn't economically viable to develop for Mac.

Maybe keep an eye out for S&Box, the successor to Garry'sMod.

It's not out yet, but uses the Source 2 engine and C# for modding, and will probably have an active community from launch.

You should keep an eye out for S&Box! It's the successor to the popular Garry's Mod. Garry's Mod is, imo, the sandbox and modding game and I think that S&Box will be even better. It's based on the Source 2 engine, and the main developer Garry has collected a lot of experience with GMod.

While GMod mods are based on Lua, S&Box uses C#, which is an awesome choice, imo. C# is a bit more verbose than Lua, but it probably enables mods of higher quality.

It's not out yet, but some keys get distributed to chosen people. Sadly, I'm not one of those.

He didn't haggle over the price of the procedure.

He only asked how much it's going to be and was charged with over double what he was quoted.

It's educational, too. Andreas has a lot of video content, which explains different OS concepts, available.

> You can also wrap a page as an app on the App Store

For example Apple's store doesn't want these web wrappers: https://developer.apple.com/app-store/review/guidelines/#min...

You make it sound like only RMS' contributions were significant for our current state of software.

There are a lot of people with significant contributions without which the world wouldn't be in its current state.

That also assumes that the atmosphere you're venting for that "cheap vacuum" is cheap as well.

Maybe has something to do with cached driver configuration, but I don't know which version of Windows introduced it. It has to do with remembering which drivers were loaded the last time the OS ran and loading those first on reboot. Saves time on checking the whole driver catalog.

I talked about that topic with my principal when I was in school.

He told me that the school had to prevent those automatic budget cuts. His reasoning was that it's nearly impossible to get a higher budget if some big expenses had to be made. And suddenly needing a higher budge, after for example 3 years of low expenses, doesn't make a good impression on higher-level administrators.

I am not GP ng to clutter my home with old, bulky and single-purpose computers.

> and the computers needed to run them are cheap

Old computers aren't always cheap. Retro PCs get expensive quick.
