AI shouldn't write tests. At least not all of them. Definitely not e2e's. The tests should be guardrails to constrain agents. This way, the author of code matters less.

My grandmother survived in the US for almost 40 years without learning English at all. This is very, very common. It's all about where you live.

My grandmother had this experience when she was still alive. While waiting for us to shop for stuff at the mall, she struck up a conversation with an older Italian lady. She only knew Italian; my grandmother only knew Spanish. They made it work!

Yes! Hey Grok was shipped to all Ryzen-based Teslas a year ago, I think. I don't use it but those that have found it useful.

This is really interesting. I wonder if etcd can benefit from this as it uses Raft for consensus and split-brain can be a problem depending on how its setup (usually when a Kubernetes control plane is initialized).

I've been asked to find bugs in PRs during interviews, even!

The problem with this is that so many diffs created by AI are gigantic. Thousands and thousands of lines of code, per PR. Of course this is fine if AI is creating, reviewing AND merging, but it's an exercise in futiliy for human reviewers, as there is no way for them to catch up.

Before the PR is cut, before the PR is sent to review (so that time isn't wasted on low-valuw bugs and problems --- engineers are expensive!), pre-merge and pre-release.

Forums were popular when they were the only option for "social" media on the Internet. Much of that conversation moved into semi-private spaces like Facebook and Discord, and Reddit, by and large, rewards short, quippy, and throwaway discourse over the longer, more "passionate" posts that forums thrived on. This is what I lament the most.

However, niche forums are still very much alive and well. Car forums in particular continue to be extremely popular, especially for enthusiasts. They're great for finding repair guides and advice that are extremely difficult to source otherwise. Shoot, even the Cybertruckies got a new forum that's doing well (though I believe it's from the same crew that owns teslamotorsclub.com, which is also doing well; in fact, I found a great thread on the founding of Tesla that had one of their pitch decks from before the Model S).

Personally, I rely on houstonarchitecture.com to see what's being built in my area. It's not _super_ active --- it's heyday was definitely in the pre-Facebook era --- but new projects still get listed and discussed over.

Definitely don't miss flamewars, though.

> Starting today, AI-generated music will not be monetizable.

HECK YES, TIDAL!!!!!! This is exactly the right move.

I only read the first half of this policy, and I absolutely love it. I hope Apple Music follows suit. (I don't trust Spotify to do so.)

Many schools have proctored and internet-restricted testing centers. They are mostly for students with IEPs though.

Loads of jobs where this is expected: sales, education, hospitality, definitely the entertainment industry, etc.

Teachers have it the worst. For many of them, there is no way to do the job right without bringing work home and being available after hours.

Tech sales can be just as bad. This is more understandable, but if customers didn't work outside of work hours, sales folks wouldn't need to either (since speed outside of work would no longer be an advantage).

Getting a separate phone and phone number for work has been one of the biggest quality of life improvements for my work life balance.

It's a small change in the macro, but doing this enabled me to (a) choose the device I want, (b) keep work stuff off of my personal phone, and, most importantly, (c) COMPLETELY disconnect from work when the day is done. This became necessary after COVID induced WFH forced work into the home and expectations around being "on" all of the time became more pervasive.

That said, "Work Profile" is one of Android's best features, and I'd love for iOS to have something equivalent. It's not as good as a physical separation, but it's the next best thing.

AirPods update while charging in their case and paired with an xOS device. You'll need to make sure that they never connect with an Apple product to "version pin" them.

Wild that they had to pay >€1500 to have documents notarized. This costs USD$25 here in the US and can be done online (not sure if incorporation documents count).

Here's to hoping that they don't pull a CyberTruck and decide "you know what? $79000 US seems like the right price."

> And then... Transformer "art". It is some of the worst drek I've seen. I smell it a mile away.

Hating that every third or fourth ad now is AI-generated. So much worse than what entry-level graphic designers can put out while putting them out of work.

rising tides lift all boats

school wasn't compulsory for most of human history. private schooling was the norm, and private school, like now, was very expensive. as a result, most people worked physical jobs and gained limited skills beyond this.

the idea of public school where everyone had a fair shot of developing skills for knowledge work was an extremely progressive concept in the beginning. what you're asking is the impact of undoing this. many states are essentially trying this through private school vouchers funded by public school dollars.

i think is a very unfortunate regression; unfortunately, it takes a generation of change for impacts to realize.
