Ads pay for much of the content we consume or services we use, my policy is to give a site a chance to show that they run ads in a respectful way- that is, ads don’t interfere with the user experience. If they abuse ads, then I block them, otherwise you’re basically stealing content.

The Wikipedia article [1] has a lot more details about the case including the extent of the child’s injuries (far more serious than his cover story would indicate) and Mr. Roberson’s prior history of physical abuse of ex spouses and his other children.

It appears that “shaken baby syndrome” was just one of the pieces of evidence that the state had in this case.

I like the approach of a Hall of Fame NHL player, Teemu Selanne- he asks "how good are you on your bad day?" and "if you're having a bad day, what can you do to make it a little bit better?"

Obviously there are exceptions when you're physically ill, but for the most part I think this approach is a good one to keep in mind because it forces you to think how you can make even an off day a little better.

lol this brings back memories. Spent 5 years working in BBV in high school and college, my first day on the job was when they installed dvd shelves in the middle of the store, was there when we removed all VHS, was there when Netflix streaming began and when we launched our own streaming service. Good times.

Just curious, how do you define anxiety?

One thing I haven't seen mentioned- a wall mounted monitor arm. I use an adjustable sit/stand desk and hated even the minor vibrations produced by my typing, attaching my monitor to a wall mounted arm eliminated this issue.

I'm not a dev but more technical than the vast majority of the non-dev population- I couldn't get docker to work and gave up trying to get it to work.

Thank you for this, perfect read for a weekend morning, reminds me of Ilf and Petrov’s chronicle of their drive across the USA around the same time- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-storied_America

Don’t confuse angellist with the crowdfunding platforms. Crowd funding platforms are used by companies that can’t attract legitimate VC investment, angel list are real VC syndicates that send accredited investors opportunities to invest in specific deals.

The large platforms enable millions of eyeballs to be aggregated together to attract advertising dollars. In return, the eyeballs receive an algorithmic feed of bite sized dopamine hits (a Tweet, a short video, an Instagram image, etc). It is easier to attract an audience, is easier to sell ads against this audience, but is this audience as valuable to the creator as Cal's 80K newsletter followers? They're different business models and each has its own place.

"89% of the world's billionaires have not held or sought political office."

Makes a far less interesting headline.

That limits content to the producers that have their own distribution mechanisms, which tend to be larger content creators. the small creator that uses Youtube, Twitch, etc for distribution will be the most hurt by such a policy.

Do you apply the same "If I pay for something then I own it" rule to content you consume via TV subscription services? What about if you pay to view a movie in a theater?

Then subscribe and pay for the service. One way or another someone has to pay for the content.

In my mid 20s, I was about $100K in debt, failed in the career that I thought I'd have after undergrad, compounded my problem by running to a grad school program because I thought it would give me a new chance at money post program and make my family proud. In my late 20s I was about $200K in debt, in a bad marriage, still unsure of what I wanted to do in my career. Fast forward to today (early 40s). I make more money than I ever imagined I could, I have a wonderful (2nd) marriage, I'm out of debt, life is good.

Learnings that led me here (in no particular order):

* don't think about what others think of you, think about what you want and what makes you happy. i know that I can't force myself to work hard on something i'm not interested in, so this was very important for me to figure out

* read "7 habits of highly effective people" - there's timeless advice there

* read "non-violent communication" - changed the way that i communicate and made my second marriage much healthier than the first, learning how to communicate in different contexts will help in your career as well

* learn to forgive, especially yourself

* accept responsibility- you're responsible for your life, no one else

* your 20s are for taking risk and figuring out what you're interested in, don't be afraid of risk, learning how to take risks and becoming comfortable with risk will help you in the long run

* luck is certainly a big factor for success, but you can set yourself up to create luck or take advantage of luck by cultivating your network, reducing debt, increasing your skills

* this was advice given to me by someone I respect- "don't chase a network or career, be interesting and add value, the rest will take care of itself." If you're interesting (had interesting experiences, have interesting thoughts and are able to communicate those things) people will be drawn to you, if you add value people will want to work with you and you'll capture some of that value back.

* Edit, one more: you can train your mind like you train your body. If identify something that's holding you back, you can change. Concrete example- in my 20s I was one of those people at parties that sits in the corner and doesn't talk to anyone because they dont know many people there. I decided that was holding me back, but I couldn't all of a sudden become "social" (just like when you first start training your body, you're not going to squat 200lbs), so I devised little exercises for myself to make me more comfortable talking to people I don't know- complementing people on their shoes while in line at a coffee shop ("those are cool shoes!"). Then when that becomes natural, asking follow up questions- "where did you get them?" and building from there.

No. I don't want to get locked out of my password manager by some algorithmic mistake (like has happened to some users that have their Google accounts locked).

After you do it if or a while, your definition of cold changes. First it was cold during the summer, now in the summer the water doesn't feel cold at all. For me to really feel cold water (after years of doing this), it has to be well before freezing outside and even then I can be standing under this water for minutes at a time.
