There are plenty of blogs out there that are profitable, like the AOL blogs, the mommyblogs, TechCrunch, Mashable, etc. The recipe is simple: focus on a monetizable niche and churn out quality content. I'm not sure if the Business Insider is profitable yet but I think it's well on track to becoming the Wall Street Journal of the 20th century.
