> That's a lot of work to avoid buying an electric blanket with a timer. I mean, it's cool and all, but I would hope the lessons learned were worth the effort.
Totally agree with you.
I guess it is rewarding to make this kind of work with success, moreover if, at the end, it costs less than the original one.
I hope the skils u've learnt will be reused in another project, maybe more "elaborated".
> Politics is just for kicks, because I know most of it is filtered and slanted by its organization. Seems it takes a day or 2 before we get the real truth to anything. The facts are normally too skewed and biased on release.
I'm totally agree with you. Most of the actual news articles are looking to create some "buzz". I rather prefer waiting few days and read complete article well structured that exposes the facts.
> I have a little suspicion that you didn't try it. :-)
Indeed, because I didn't understand, as you imagine, how is works and why it more convenient than orther app. So I'll not give a try to something that is not clear.
I mean, every smartphone has a note app, which do not require internet, so why people will use messageyourself instead of a basic app already existing ?
Like you, I tried several tools for taking notes (work or personnal). However, I didn't succeed using them during a long time.
So I switched to little notebook with one pen that is smooth to use. For now I find (quite) easily my notes, but in the future I'll probable need an easy why to search and find notes.
Usinge Markdown might be the newt thing I'll do. It's super easy to get perfect/clean notes with it.
So you might have a try with a notebook and see if it's enought for you.
All my note are "simple", they are only ideas or TODOs. But if you want to keep some code/dev/scripts notes you should concider markdown tool.
I just have a few try on it and I find it quite laggy.
Example : go to -> top devs -> choose one dev -> go back . Here is super laggy. Am I the only one ? (Edit : no i'm not :D)
Exactly, that's what I'm trying to do ... which is not easy :).
By doing this, I'm less on my phone & less on my computer.
in the same time I delete some time-consuming apps on my phone.
One thing I can add is to focus on the things your are doing and stick to them.
For example : reading a book or an article completely . Sometimes I just read the title and only some of the sentences, thus I don't the get the point or the idea of the authors. (it is one among many others)
What could work is to drink water with your old cup of coffee. That might sounds bullshit but, but your body is accustomed to have the coffee cup in hands. It like a smokers that have to have somthing between his fingers, and that's why they end up by eating some junk food (not all of them of course)
> Absolutely. I work in cleantech, and you should, too! Solar and wind are economical, so now the biggest issue is scaling them up. That means tons and tons of problem solving, which means great engineering jobs!
Economical right. But can it replace nuclear power plants ? Because we need a LOT of power (datacenter, electric cars ?).
We love meat too. What I do is trying to not go to McDonalds or fast food so often where meat are mostly sh*t, but rather go to a local farmer and buy fresh meat. Maybe twice a week.
I definitely think that we can't do anything as developers (maybe optimizing process to consume less, but that's not obvious). And here is why :
- we used computers/servers/hard disks/etc that are made of rare-earth metals (which required a lot of energy to be extracted and are a environmental disaster (first link in google : https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2012/aug/07/china-ra...).
- big datacenters, in which our compagnies are involved into, require a fabulous amount of energy to work (cooling système, electricity, etc), proably more that average cities.
However, what you (and we) could do as citizen could be :
- buy from local/bio producers
- do not buy shitty products coming directly from china that will last 1 week and then will be broken for no reason.
- think twice before buying new product (not only electronic ones). do I need this new smartphone (which, by the way, his cost is half a salary or a all salary for most of the people ?) can I repear it ?
- do not buy big companies' products (coke, nutella, etc). They are destroying environement (mexican vilages have less and less water because of coca-cola, nutala are heavily using palm oil...) Those are only 2 examples.
Easy to write, not to do ...
> Sadly I'm just a Software Engineer and I feel that I cannot help as, for example, a Genetic Engineer to make those ideas become true. I'm not a genius, nor a millionaire philanthropist, neither a clever startup founder.
Most of us are in the same case.
I'm actually reading Gunter Pauli's books regarding the "Blue Economy". -> https://www.theblueeconomy.org/
There are plenty of "simple" ideas that might be "easy" to implements in our life as side-projects.
I'm facing the same problem. I still have my account for now.
What I'm thinging is that if I delete it, the ones that will contact me with an other way (messages, phone, email, ...) will be my true friends and not only fb friend.
Of course we will lost contact with John or Sara or Maria who is somewhere else in the world, but concretely what was the last we discuss each other ?
One way to reduce the time you are using it, is to uninstall it from your phone as drKarl said. If you still want to be on facebook or messenger to keep a link with your friend, go only with your computer (if you have one) and limit it 15-20 minutes to check news and answer.
Leaving facebook depends also on your friends. If they understand your choice, then they will contact you with messages or phone calls. If they don't, then it might be more difficult.
Totally agree with you. I guess it is rewarding to make this kind of work with success, moreover if, at the end, it costs less than the original one. I hope the skils u've learnt will be reused in another project, maybe more "elaborated".
