That requires money. (GOTO makeMoney)

How long will that $4.40 rate persist? Until we know more about the real unit economics it will be damn near impossible to rely on steady inference costs or make them predictable at the enterprise level. Gonna be a wild ride for awhile.

“Stop being so intransigent” / “I will NEVER buy a car that doesn’t support CarPlay” is pretty funny.

That said, I agree with the author. Autos are not software companies and they are only locking us in for their own benefit. Anybody not supporting other common standards is probably not telling the whole truth about the reasoning.

European companies aren’t much different so just be sure to check where you stand first before you’re SURE you’ve actually escaped.

BIT of a broad brush there but we can take the critique.

While we vote for our leaders we don’t exactly get a say or have awareness of what sort of covert bullshit some over eager Yale graduate is doing as a top secret operation.

Old style forums were better because fewer people were on them, there was no monetary incentive to contribute (you just cared) and the community wasn’t toxic.

Reddit-style sites can also be this - you just need to build the right community. (This is very very hard)

Anyway my hypothesis here is clearly the community is the value and not necessarily the method of posting.

Apparently they hired some payday loans marketing folks recently?

As much as I like(d) Anthropic and their approach to being a lab / PBC, if you hire that many people that fast for that much money, it’s inevitable that you end up with some of the same grifters that destroyed the internet. Seems hard to stop them somehow from also destroying their next company.

There are probably a number of more Roman cultural hallmarks around than what are mentioned in the article but they don’t have something that sounds like Rome in the name. Some tenuous stuff here that is quite random, but hey I clicked.

No - this was a separate power unrelated to the supply chain risk which is still in effect.

Anecdata suggests NSA just got on board and kept going tbh. Not sure they’ve felt the same impacts / churn as other agencies, and not sure they’ve ever really been that beholden to the DNI.

Agreed. Subcontracting this was a mistake.

True. It absolutely will take your money :)

I have kids, and I don't think we need age verification. I'm not blaming the websites for content my kids access, and I have to work to make sure I'm tracking what my kids are doing.

Not saying we should stop trying to verify age in a privacy-respecting way, but the current incentive structure means that we cannot really EXPECT this in the near term.

If we cannot expect it, then we should not legislate or require it until the right solution has been found and we need to encourage our lawmakers to FUND the right way to do this.

I'm not handwaving the problems of children on social media, but it is within parental control to a certain extent, and preventing access with age verification will not prevent access in other places, nor help them deal with the onslaught when they are of age to make decisions.

While I agree that this is annoying, you're trying to interact with the federal government which actually does require IDENTITY verification and not age verification in order to perform its duties. That id.me account allows you to take actions on behalf of a citizen, so they need to confirm some things first.

It's not great, but it's not what the original poster is against.

Honest answer -- you're right.

Sorry but this “people aren’t the same because headphones” (or podcasts or <insert here>) is just too convenient a narrative especially when your pull quotes are from random college newspapers and small scale studies.

Having some music or a podcast to listen to on your commute is the new “I have a giant newspaper in front of my face”.

If you want to have a random conversation you totally can! But like all things in life - the other person may not want to have that conversation at that time.

No, not generally.

That said, there can be some "Oh yeah - well if you're insinuating that white people are displacing black people then YOU are the racist" which is just... not the same thing. One view of the world may incorporate a significant accommodation and acknowledgement of historical discrimination, enslavement, red-lining, you name it. The other is... technically correct I suppose, but complete horseshit on the merits until we start to see significant, systemic harm going the other direction as a result of race.

But that's just, like, my opinion man.
