Well, you are right (and top has the same problem if not worse), but I'm always surprised what these tools are doing that they take significat CPU time. Parsing 200 virtual text files every second for sure should not.

top manages to take 6% CPU on my Macbook.

$38 billion sounds like a big number, but there are a couple of sources online that claim that Americans eat about 50 billion burgers per year:

So even if all of the $38 billion went into burgers, it would not be much per burger.
