Lost respect for American immigration laws long back. This is not a crack down this is pretence of doing something by creating more trouble for those who are actually obeying the law. (All illegal dreamers have work authorisation today, but not all spouses of H1B taxpayers get it. Indians are waiting for decades to get their work authorisation precisely because they obeyed law).
Entered the country hoping to become a citizen, now it is all about squeeze maximum money you can and leave. The good part however is this is actually bringing better jobs to India.
I am sorry to harsh words but this is really bad bad journalism. Objective of tech articles should be to educate an average person and not to deliberately confuse him/her/it.
This is not clickbait but worse than that.
One Bitcoin Transaction = "Energy used to mine one bitcoin". A novice might read this as "Energy spent if I buy something worth $10 using bitcoins.
When miners are mining bitcoin it is not a mindless pursuit of a digital currency. They are also doing the extremely important work of keeping the records aka blockchain. Easily the total value addition here is lot more than the cost of energy involved (else no one would do it).
People are ignoring scale effects of Bitcoin. Bitcoin currently like wild west. Only crazy, brave, adveturers or stupid are entering this land. $7000 is bloody nothing. Bitcoin will reach $100K sooner or later and very tightly integrated with our life. Buy it now or regret it later.
Falling birth-rates of middle-class/upper middle-class in USA coupled with strong government hatred for Asian immigrants is likely to result into serious economic issues for USA in next 10-15 years.
As the society fails to generate highly productive people all that debt is going to become a problem.
The doomsday articles should be taken with a pinch of salt. Economy by itself has a very good recuperative power because people like to trade and get themselves into better situation.
The real thing that worries me more about recession is that a person like Trump might simply try to "fix it" and in the process claiming more power to himself which will make things worse. It is undeniable that Bush's "fix terrorism" and Obama's "fix economy" has proved to be a disaster to both safety and economy.
It is worth asking how successful the visa has been. From what I have seen the visa was heavily abused by progeny from corrupt Indian politicians who sent their kids to USA with boatload of money.
China is deeply racist and expansionist. Their claims on various parts of India are totally ridiculous. Their annexation Tibet is also blatantly illegal.
China is not USA, it is not full of white people and multiculturalism. China will eventually trigger WW-3.
HN probably won't question her overpay for two reasons
1. Fear of being labelled as sexist.
2. It makes no sense. She is not really overpaid.
Firstly, Mayer's career is over. After her spectacular failure as a leader I think she can say goodbye to her career and spend rest of her time vacationing in Bahamas. Of course she is a smart woman and she had factored in this risk and is part of the reason she gets a golden parachute.
Ask yourself this : Will you end your career today if someone gives you 10x of you current salary today ? Then ask if 10x is an overpay.
> to balance the benefit gained by the guy who took the action, compared to the loss his community suffered by his departure.
Not true. Any resource when used efficiently benefits whole of humanity. It is better if a boy from Ghana comes to USA and invents a vaccine to some disease than he stays back as just a doctor in this village.
People when they travel it is not an isolated incident. They tell their friends about the reality of other nations and then they aspire to be like other nations. We see it in India and China a lot.
Wish you the best. Also people who keep complaining about other people's privileges should read this several times. People rising from bottom to top is more common than we think.
This statistical comparison is completely irrelevant because it has totally different type of distribution. You can look at car accidents of last 10 years and confidently say next year will have X deaths in car accident.
Terrorism however has a fat tailed distribution. All your last 20 years of data is useless if some Buddhist terrorist managed to bring a small nuclear weapon in a downtown of some large American city or some Hindu monk poisoned public water distribution system with some deadly poison or some Amish lady releases anthrax in an amusement park.
Threat of terrorism may not be as sever as worth destroying Iraq or Syria or travel ban. May be US government's policies are actually increasing that threat instead of lowering it but that sort of comparison should be used on HN simply because it is incorrect.
> I wonder why they've never picked up on the obvious real-world example of a nation with no central state government with a monopoly on violence?
Reason 1: Enforcement of contracts.
Reason 2: Non-Aggression
Libertarians of most stripes believe in limited role for government one of which is to enforce contracts and protect individual liberty. Since both are missing it is hard for Nigeria to be a good example of a Libertarian state.
If anything Nigeria proves a lot of Libertarian principles at work. Nigerians have built roads, built private water distribution systems and private schools despite no existence of government. The state could have achieved lot more if they could have had a basic government.
I don't think there is an endgame. Softbank simply wants to grow its wealth over time.
> Instead of doing something a la YCombinator?
YC is not scalable. After a big long process handful are selected who qualify for a small amount of investment and only handful of them succeed. At least by stage 1 hardly ~ $500M will be invested and Softbank has like $$$$$.
Much better to wait and let YC do the filtering and once you see something is successful invest in them for a long term gain.
