the theory I’ve heard says that’s extremely unlikely. The US only has ~80 destroyers most of which are protecting their super carriers. They don’t want to police the worlds oceans anymore. [1] https://youtu.be/mcZPOuI-vcU?feature=shared

as a lefty I’ve found what qualifies a good pen is how quickly the ink dries to prevent smudging

I’ve been waiting for a killer feature that will make it more than just an expensive fitbit for me. Every generation I say “surely the next gen will be it” but it never was (I guess I’m a laggard in ‘Crossing the Chasm’ parlance).

Personally I expect a Siri overhaul / replacement with an LLM. To me that would be a total game changer and I’d be first in line!

Lol for real, like what are we even doing here?

Actually Source was never a popular engine among developers. If you exclude valve we’re talking dozens maybe? And when 250+ games are released on every week on Steam it’s a very rarely used engine

procedural programming (is it data or is it code, it can’t be both)

and data oriented design with SOA and deferred buffering

for games at least code needs to be highly cache friendly and dumping OOP makes it way easier to reason about program state and code flow

sort of related, I wish there were a way to filter suggestions & subscriptions. I only care about videos longer than 4 minutes. Anything shorter is almost always not worth my time. Plus I subscribe to news networks in a foreign language to practice listening and my subscription feed everyday has about 60-100 videos that are a minute or less, or a short. But all I want are the 3+ hour news spots they do.

this right here. I went from a 1080p 24” @144Hz to a 1440p 27” @160Hz and it’s night and day. It was in that perfect sweet spot for size too, not just performance and quality. The bigger you go the further you have to sit from the screen, but 27” is just right.

Not really about the article but, I wonder if Dostoevsky inspired the Netflix show Living With Yourself. I thought it was a cool premise, but this sounded very similar. In either case it goes to show the value of being well read

I would counter with the idea that seniority and programming ability are inversely proportional via The Gervais Principal (mentioned on hn again just recently)

CICO is almost as pernicious and ubiquitous. It really grinds my gears when people try to use “intuition” to understand something super complex with no data at all. People talk about “metabolism” the same way.

Say the word “toxins” around me and I will fight you in the streets.

I left long ago for Vivaldi. Glad I was gone for the ads in the search bar by default. That kind of behavior, to me, shows a change in priorities away from the user.

In Vivaldi you can set nicknames for bookmarks. So you could type

“Ctrl+L” to select the address bar

then

“rv” or “vid” or whatever you want, to take you to the bookmarked r/videos page, which you can also leave out of the bookmarks bar if you don’t want the clutter

I do this all the time now, since most websites I visit are my frequently visited (probably true for everyone). Optimize life’s most used code paths my friend and come on over to Vivaldi. This is not a paid ad lol.

I am really surprised I haven’t heard anyone talk about false positive rates, false negative rates, or bayes’ theorem since covid tests first became available. I mentioned it to family when the stories of conflicting tests showed up on the news and they balked at the idea of using math…we are very different people, my family and I lol
