I remember Firefox crashing on me nearly daily around the time Chrome came out. I didn’t need anyone to push Chrome on me. Chrome was just simply technologically superior.

But of course today there is little reason to not use Firefox.

Just like every submission about C/C++ gets a comment about how great Rust is, every submission about Rust gets a comment about how great Zig is. Like a clockwork.

Edit: apparently I am replying to the main Zig author? Language evangelism is by far the worst part of Rust and has likely stirred up more anti Rust sentiment than “converting” people to Rust. If you truly care for your language you should use whatever leverage you have to steer your community away from evangelism, not embrace it.

In the past you looking around documentation, SO answers etc would have hopefully helped you learn more about the tools and develop skills required to independently analyze the pros and cons. If you ask an LLM (or a search engine or a colleague) and take their words as the ground truth then you won’t develop the skills. Worst, sooner or later no one will have enough knowledge nor analytic skill to form an opinion on any sufficiently deep subject and they will all be dependent on corporate chatbots to spoon feed them information that may or may not be biased in a way against your interest. Now imagine if ChatGPT tells you to use azure and Gemini tells you to use GCP…

There is no answer to the question “what Joyce would have done…”. None. Nil. They are dead and anything done it their name is by definition not what they would have done, but what future generations who are convinced that they know better than the men themselves did.

It is better to leave unanswerable questions unanswered.

I am not against LLM technologies in general. But this trend of using LLMs to give a seemingly authoritative and conclusive answer to questions where no such thing is possible is dangerous to our society. We will see an explosion of narcissistic disorders as it becomes easier and easier to construct convincing narratives to cocoon yourself in, and if you dare questioning them they will tell you how the LLM passed X and Y and Z benchmarks so they cannot be wrong.
