In some senses, it's just a rehashing of the old "bread and circuses" line. Except this time it's iphones and a starbucks latte.

They're absolutely crazy in their delusional bubbles as usual. VR doesn't help homeless people freezing under a highway overpass or feed the food insecure.
The lower- and middle-classes are already addicted to their phones as like mindless, drug-addicted zombies. Maybe more of the lower classes can be brought into the fold to stop thinking about reality with weapons of mass distraction.
Overall, the parasite class are leading the people to ruin and the planet to ecological collapse from insanity, sociopathy, and greed. Then, when a very small group of people threatens to kill you and your descendants, what should do you do, peacefully picket or gather signatures? No because it's neither proportional nor effective.
