I recommend you reach out to people on LinkedIn, try interviewing them, try video-calling them.... Escalate in terms of Trust offered and expected, as is the norm for hiring.

For my bootstrapped startup interviewing members is expensive so looking for ways to do background check for free.
Can one keep google as their past employeer on Linkedin even though they never worked there before?
I think work eamil is the best way to validate ones employment then. what do you say?

Don't shortcut hiring. Just because someone worked at Google does not mean they are a good engineer for you. They are probably more expensive too. There are plenty of quality engineers at non-FAANG orgs.
Hiring well takes effort, you will get out what you put in. Good candidates will sense this and pass on you.

Ask for references and follow up on them, that’s basically what background checks do anyway
