Wow, this story has holes.
First of all, the people the US is training already have power and influence, that's why they are being trained. Second, how exactly does the subject specific training they receive help them achieve a coup, good journalism shouldn't just make correlations it should connect the dots and explain the reasoning behind their claim. Third, why is the US training them? Mostly for counterterrorism and regional stability in the interest of the US right? So how many of the other officers the US has trained helped prevent expansion of terrorists, civil wars,etc...
Despite popular belief, it has never been the objective of the US military or IC to spread or maintain democracies across the world. The mindset they've been operating for many decades now is that the primary threat to americans festers in random foreign countries as witness in 9/11, kenya embassy bombing, USS cole (?) bombing even as far back as pearl harbor. This is the reason the US has AFRICOM for example or 800+ bases in foreign countries, no other country has such a large scale foreign military presence. So, democracy or not if you are a leader of a government you can only stay that way by having a strong military or being a solid ally of a powerful country. You can't be weak and friendless.

What I do not know if NATO was able to change regime in a country, without having it (NATO) being directly involved in a conflict.
In my understanding if NATO was able to change a regime, there were expressly military boots on the ground (or bombing campaigns like in Yugoslavia)
Some of these regimes are horrible to their own people, so the change by NATO (acting an alias term for 'US') is good.
Sort of like the Spanish Conquistadors stopped the horrors of the Aztec empire [1]
