Ask HN: What are the use-cases for open-source projects these days?

Been a bit out of the loop, wanted to build two projects in the AI space, I used to support the idea of open-source but I am finding the online world increasingly hostile, and I'd prefer to work with like 3 people in a cabin in the forest somewhere.

It also feels like maintainers of these projects are just seen as slave labour.

What is the 'status' of recent and new open source projects? When does it make sense?

Just because you publish a project as FOSS doesn't mean that you owe anyone anything, even collaboration. It would be polite to document if you don't want to, but that's it.
