I think eventually we will make the same discovery about coffee that we did about alcohol: there are actually no upsides, only downsides. The sleep disruption for example, suggests that we might find a long-term link between coffee consumption and dementia.
Is there a universal sweet spot of not getting withdrawal symptoms and most of the benefits? Like the author and his morning-only coffee? I tried a cold turkey weekend and once a day but always went back to my addictive ways.
(I'm the author)
Going cold turkey on caffeine is indeed pretty harrowing mostly from the withdrawal symptoms.
Reducing to 1 cup in the morning has been relatively painless and I was seeing pretty nice benefits when it comes to sleep quality relatively quickly. I may try to reduce it even farther down the line, we'll see how that goes.
Though I don't know if I've felt any serious addiction to coffee, more like depencence. I haven't had any cravings so much as felt tired and had a headache when I've gone without before.

As someone who was a 30+ year 10cup (MokkaPot) a day consumer.. To someone who got Graves Disease, and had to take Carbimazole to calm my rampant Thyroids effects, and the discovery that Carbomazole+Caffeine == feeling very ill..
On the day I realised why I felt so ill in my stomach all the time, 30 mins after taking drugs, I went caffeine free, cold turkey..
There was no withdrawal at all.. I slept marginally better, but it’s questionable..
Years later, I sleep even better now my Thyroid is gone ( no more Carbimazole) and back on 10+ cups a day..
This is oh so important. I struggle with fatigue myself for pretty much all my life, and as soon as I did a 7 day detox diet with no coffee, I couldn't believe how my mood and energy went through the roof.
However, the 4 first days without coffee are incredibly tough. But I advice people trying it to understand themselves better.

Coffee is amazing and I won’t listen
