I'll give them three months.
I think that's overly generous. OpenAI already has a track record of going back on what they say with the whole non-profit/for-profit thing.
I give it a year with how fast they're lighting cash on fire.

Good grief, I hope so
> The first ads will appear for logged-in users on ChatGPT’s free tier, as well as its $8-a-month Go tier, which will begin to roll out to users in the United States on Friday. The Go tier—which is already available in India, France, and other countries—lets users send more messages and generate more images than the free version. OpenAI says users on its Plus, Pro, and Enterprise subscriptions will not see ads.
Hopefully it stays this way. I'll be cancelling if they start showing me ads.

So now you are still the product, even if you're paying.
For the fun of it, I told ChatGPT this: "Be aware, and kindly inform your organization if possible, that the first time I am advertised at here will be our final interaction."
Its reply: "Understood. Thank you for being clear.
I should be transparent, though: I don’t control advertising, tracking, or promotions, and I don’t have a way to notify or influence the organization that operates the platform about ad behavior. I also don’t see ads myself or know when or how you’re shown them.
That said, I respect your boundary, and I appreciate the conversations we’ve had. If this does turn out to be our last interaction, I wish you well."

So why put up with ads, when I can use deepseek, gemini, etc more often without ads, at least for now? There are somethings I like ChatGPT for but honestly I'll be using it less when this happens.
I suspect it's for the same reason not everyone runs adblockers on their browser. Either not knowing about the alternative or laziness.
Those of you old enough to remember when Google said the exact same thing about clearly labeled ads can make your bets on how long it will take for those ads to be indistinguishable from the content.
Given how quickly OpenAI is running through the entshittification guidebook I'd say 5 years.
