I disagree with the premise of this article. Software development is largely a waterfall process even if you use TDD (which was using a machine gun to chop down a tree) and the effort estimation is both predictable and consistent. At least with the model that we use in-house developed over the past 10 years that has resulted in several exits.

Don't rely on HN submissions to shape your view of the world. Pedantry, pendants waste your time. Only real world results and data matter. The people who can't do simply teach or publish papers so all you are left are people who grab a leg or an arm and think its an elephant in complete darkness. You simply will never ever find us publishing these information nor do others that have figured it out.

Transparency when it comes to winning trust is a must. Disclosures in the name of generosity or some collective good is lust; You might feel good but it ultimately results in increased competition and higher operating cost until your edge disappears. We are not in the business of helping our competitors, we use our unique edge to push them out of the market when we can, we use capital to buy them out when we can't.

I'm okay with this. Before, I was definitely using DDG less.

It's good to see Microsoft still keeping up the good fight.

somebody is flagging all the comments that is criticizing github's original decision to side with those who were offended by someone worrying about Nazis who were present at the rallies.

yet the bottom line is that Github was okay with its workers posting anti-semitic memes and there is a significant chunk of people on HN that backs this.

I am beyond disappointed in both Github and HN.

As per theverge article, they did nothing when anti-semitic memes and jokes were being posted by their employees.

So what can we take away from this? Github's "professional conduct at workplace" and "diversity" is complete farce.

I'm ready to move to bitbucket after this incident. When you promote people who share hatred, this means the company at the top probably also shares the same vision.

This is a PR disaster for github and there is NO WAY I can support github going forward.

Once again, somebody has flagged every single criticisms of Github's original decision. Is this Github doing damage control? I'm going to move our team completely off github now.

Clearly they have priorities straight or this is a case of "the fish rots from the head".

It's okay to post anti-semetic memes but not calling out actual Nazis that were present?

Then its okay to downvote and censor all the comments on HN that calls out the absurdity of it all?

Just what is happening to HN? What is going on with the US? We are not breaking any rules yet we are all getting flagged and downvoted for expressing shock.

What happened to free speech or does HN folks no longer believe in America?

Can someone offer an explanation as to why HN is nuking all threads and comments discussing the theverge article on this incident?
458aperta

see my profile. all flagged. definitely not deliberate at all as my comments weren't even inflammatory or breaking HN rules.

Just some old timer users afraid that not everybody is buying into his/her/their narrative.

what's weird is that how quickly comments are being flagged and removed in this thread for simply discussing the contents of the article.

Divide & conquer. This is the war that is being waged on America; your minds. Who has the most intimate and proximity in determining what the collective sees? The device in your pocket is how people view the world. Nobody is reading books, nobody is practicing critical thinking anymore.

If I was a foreign power I wouldn't go up militarily against the US, that would be disastrous. Instead, I would head to the universities, I would fund the companies that are in close proximity to the consumer of popular media. I would start 20,30,40 years ago and slowly change what the people in your country thinks about their status quo. The top brass doesn't care because they don't see weapons. Underpaid, underappreciated, unscrupulous individuals are easily won over. Again, the decision makers don't see the enemies here. Then one day, the small cuts collectively add up and the wounds begin to rot from within. Once again, nobody raises alarms because they are incentivized or naivete from being #1 for so long.

I would go even further by focusing on the existential crisis of the non-majority ethnic groups and exploit it into hating the very country they are in because of isms. Then you go to the other side which is the conservative portion of the majority ruling class and sell them the idea that those people are ungrateful and hostile.

Throw technology and fast food equivalent of entertainment that creates a population addicted to the short bursts of serotonin and you just might be witnessing what you are seeing today.

Bonus points for dividing the political ruling class by feeding exploitative information true or not that will be weaponized.

It doesnt help that they constantly shut down criticism of it which only emboldens those who live in this new borderline thought police order as the norm.

The side effect of this is that it aggravates hostility towards those very groups that society is "protecting". I just see no way out of this downward spiral.

Pretty soon we will be "reeducated" when it offends the hypersensitive hive mind in a semi totalitarian "western democracy"

I do believe that we will see secession of states like Texas who has their own conventional military and tech giants relocating there signals tax cuts. This would seriously undermine the Biden-Harris administration and I don't believe that Texas in particular will end up like Quebec where it needs to rely on Federal subsidies and generous tax credit for businesses.

I love that bitcoin maximalists have now become the ire of the global warming movement. Quite fitting as it literally is the ponzi scheme of our generation helping criminals launder their money. History will not be kind to those who pushed shitcoins, I personally would never ever hire someone who've been associated with such outfit.

Still not as good as printed ink but this is good enough for many applications.

My theory is the instagram effect. People actually believe what they see is real and so the people living in those instagram photos believe i the "fake it till you make it" toxicity.

Yes primarily to build a mobile app but I want to be able to have a web version as well. I guess I want to understand what the overall experience has been using Flutter with Amplify as that seems to be the winning combo, although I am open minded.

I've used React/Redux before and couldn't help but feel that it was over-engineered sort of like micro-service architecture but to each his own.
