Though it is a more obvious supplement, I am surprised melatonin is not on here. Your body produces melatonin (often known as the sleep compound) naturally, and it regulates sleeping and circadian rhythm.
It is available OTC and is relatively safe to take. Don't take it every day and take a low dosage. I take it when traveling (to help with jetlag) and every once in a while just to help with sleep. It definitely puts you in a deeper sleep. Some people who take it even report more vivid dreams (and I would definitely agree).
A startup I have worked at had a programmer who had PhD in math. His prior experience was primarily shell scripting in addition to some other very minor experience. A PhD in math will tell a potential employer that you are smart. Very smart. A lot of computer science (CS not programming) is essentially math.
You definitely have an advantage in many of the more mathematical areas (machine learning, etc.) and your degree will show that you'll likely be able to learn quickly. Your PhD will only help, not hurt. Just do some side projects in a popular language like Ruby, Python, or something else that is relevant and you will be more than fine.
I too was pretty much addicted to sugar. Mostly dessert-like foods and soda. There are a few things that will help reduce the sugar cravings:
- Eat a little more protein. No need to go crazy, but just have more protein.
- Eat more fiber. Very few people eat enough fiber. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Fruits are a great way to get some sugar, but the fructose in fruit is absorbed more slowly than a cookie.
- Have some cinnamon. I sprinkle a little cinnamon on everything. Occasionally I'll even take a cinnamon tablet. Supposedly helps with cravings.
- Drink more water. When I pretty much stopped having sugar I was having 3-4 liters (roughly a gallon) of water a day.
- Eat good fats. Nuts, peanut butter, almond butter, avocados, etc. Helps with cravings too.
- And of course exercise. There are too many good things exercise does for you.
I have pretty much stopped having sugar (other than in social situations i.e. given a piece of birthday cake). I drink my coffee black, no sugar in my tea, and don't drink any more soda.
One thing I would add is either reducing title size on the front page, or adding an adjustable title size on the front page (and remember that title size). I wouldn't mess with the font size otherwise, it just throws everything off.
Otherwise, this is terrific! Only bad part is endless scrolling may keep me on HN even longer.
Remember The Milk has great google calendar integration. There is a gadget that can be displayed in google calendar in addition to feeds that google calendar can import (including an events feed). It has nearly every feature for tasks.
I love apple, and I am an apple investor. Their stock will do fine for at least a few years. Though, no one knows if apple will stay "cool" and their products will still sell 4,000,000 units (iphone 4S) in a weekend. Many people thought nothing would happen to Sony when they were hot and innovative. Same thing with Microsoft.
It is slightly different because Apple has more vertical integration and horizontal integration as well, so people buy into the Apple ecosystem. For example, I have a mac and an Android phone, but I like the way the iPhone syncs seamlessly with my mac, so I might get an iPhone when my contract is up.
Ultimately, sales/revenues and profits GROWTH determine the stock price. At their current P/E it is hard to say they are overvalued. A multiple of 16.63 (close on 10/17) is very low for a high growth tech company. In fact, McDonald's, which is considered a value stock, has a higher multiple (almost 18). And as a more relevant example, Amazon's is over 100. Apple clearly is not overvalued at this point (in my opinion at least).
Random thoughts: Apple has roughly 1 billion shares outstanding and Microsoft has 8 billion. If Apple did an 8 for 1 stock split, the price would be at $50, and no one would ask this question.
