Good luck clashing with the EU GDPR requirements. Bad for Google's pocket and their reputation. That said - this thread isn't doing their reputation much good anyway...!

Great article!

Though perhaps one of the things downplayed is how often food is an expression of love. Most frequently, the love of the person making it for the one eating it. But, also the love of sharing a family or cultural recipe with a wider audience and passing that love on to strangers, who may in turn pass it on.

My memories of happy times and happy places are often linked to food. The first time I had a courgette (my Italian friend making a simple recipe from his village), the taste of popping candy as a kid, my mum's roast dinner, and eating Nasi Goreng in Malaysia and giant garlic prawns in Lombok on my honeymoon!

In my family - food has always been a way to show your love.

Loss of productivity isn't due to WFH though.

It's a combination of factors, including the mental and physical strain of living through a pandemic. This includes many people being ill, managing long Covid, losing friends and family, struggling through home schooling, missing sports and activities, and in some cases having your support network suddenly taken away (such as addiction groups or parenting support groups).

It is an oversimplification to lay this at the door of WFH, which has been hugely successful for many industries, including technology.

Not having the resources and support to WFH successfully is another case though...

This is like the gif where everyone draws a picture on the back of the person in front and the end result is nothing like the original. Chinese whispers in art form!

Thank you for this interesting article. The story behind fonts and printing is absolutely fascinating. Thought-provoking to see the evolution of a font over so many years.

The Garden Bridge project in London. £53m spent, nothing ever happened... Just a big vanity project led by the former mayor of London.

True - it was better to hire a chauffeur who had his own car than to buy a car (also traffic was crazy). He is from the UK - Public transport is pretty good in the UK and across much of Europe. As I recall, there were issues with terrorist bombing shopping centres and public transport in Manila at the time, so I think he avoided both.

Heart-breaking and frightening. My sister is a teacher and has never been so demotivated and defeated. Needs a substantial investment in training new teachers and adding infrastructure, and a genuine commitment to improving the system (not just adding more testing and hoop-jumping).

I know what you mean - never enough time in the day. I'm also based in Spain and they are all night owls, which doesn't help...

Very interesting. I believe there is also the concept of sleep hygiene (nope - not a shower!) which involves creating a bedroom environment and routine to ensure consistent, uninterrupted sleep. A good night's sleep isn't just good for your mental health and productivity, it's also a good healer for your body.

I think this has a lot of truth. My brother was based in the Philippines for a while for work and was expected to have at least a housekeeper and a chauffeur. I think having a driver was a very reasonable safety measure given the traffic there too. At the time it seemed very ostentatious to us at home, but it was totally the norm.

I think this is a crux of it, "we should view terrible events as survivable." That said - it's very easy for people who are not scared to tell the people who are, not to be (and shows a lack of empathy). I don't believe anyone WANTS to live in fear, they need practical steps to manage and rationalise it.

This is so funny. But, anything that dissuades the kids from putting them in their mouths is okay by me! (If only because the games are so expensive I don't want them eaten!)
