America may be become a gerontocracy but it’s far more likely to be a plutocracy first and that will cause more long term harm. Old people die eventually, but the ultra rich keep it in the family.
I find it very interesting to read blogs like this which describe and predict the societal impact of AI. However, this impact is all framed in terms of developers. In the end this is a niche (albeit an important one) use of AI. I don’t believe for a moment that software development will be the primary use of LLMs that changes society, at least not in the long term.
Is it possible this is vapour marketing and no projects are actually being selected?
Perhaps someone from a project who has heard back can respond here?
It’s great this debate is happening. The people on hn are some of those that can make a real impact here. There are many parallels with the industrial revolution here but we really don’t want to repeat a over a century of misery that occurred after that era. If we don’t want the world to be run be a tiny group of trillionaires, some action needs to be taken now
Considering the economic angle, one possible long term future is that access to frontier models is only realistic for the wealthiest 1%
They will use this access to the ultra intelligent models to increase their wealth further. Inequality will continue to be negatively impacted
You’re quite correct and we are likely going to stumble into this future despite all the very big brains working on these technologies (including people on hn).
“It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends upon his not understanding it.”
The credit card companies really missed the boat here to become the standard for consumer to consumer payments. Of course, from their perspective, they know that people would not accept having to pay for this service so the companies won’t go near it.
What a great resource. On a related note, while I love the content here on hn, the message threading is far from optimal. I know there are many alternate interfaces, can anyone recommend the best alternative ux for hn?
To repeat what’s been said before, the only way the large AI vendors can get a return on their huge investment is to eat the entire economy ($20/month won’t cut it). All information worker jobs are at risk and the creative ones are not immune.
