My iPhone's battery health has been stuck at 83% for nearly 15 months. It was only 9 months old (purchased brand new) when it reached 83%. Apple will not replace with Applecare unless it is below 80%. Something doesn't add up there.

Are there new 2023 requirements? In the past, the only thing that DOE requirements applied to was the "Normal" cycle. All others can use as much water as they want since DOE regs don't apply.

Apple tried with Apple News+ and hasn't exactly succeeded. If they can't succeed, I fail to see how anyone else could. Maybe a few media incumbents?

There’s a huge industry of leasing jet engines to avoid downtime since most shop time is spent waiting for engine repair. The lessors hot swap engines and avoid downtime for an entire jet just so an engine can get serviced. This is a perfectly normal practice in the aviation industry.

Your second point is very interesting to me as someone born in 2000 who's only really known a world where this is true. It seems so distant and novel from where we are today.

I agree that it appears externally that immigrants to the US tend to succeed more than those to Europe, but what's the cause? Higher wages and a stronger economy certainly play a role, but I suspect there's more at play here. A more selective visa program? It's one I would argue is overly selective especially when considering that one can be born here to illegal immigrants and be a US citizen.

Geovision has had a ton of security incidents. Perhaps they're easy to set up, but they definitely aren't secure.

Germany's new citizenship law looks extremely compelling. Moreover, they have a relatively easy visa system to navigate with straightforward immigration rules. There's a very useful subreddit with a very dedicated moderator. [1]

I have no problem with this personally. But I fear that nuclear fearmongers would capitalize on this as a possible "worst-case scenario" if we tried to deploy such a plan. Is this thought misguided?

Is all that much support needed? Maybe for crops grown on trees or something, but in videos I’ve seen about indoor farming [1], there hasn’t been much other than basic metal cages with containers spaced out.

Yeah, I’m not referring to useful ones being actively used for towing. I’m referring to people that leave them in while driving around not towing anything. Some are designed to extend upward as well with no practical towing purpose. Look up pictures of collisions after someone has a tow hitch in and you’ll see what I mean.

How could you possibly imagine the average city resident uses more energy when dwellings are smaller, newer on average (more energy efficient), and residents are less likely to own a car?

As someone who feels the same way, I’ve lost all hope for the US in this regard. SUV/truck sales have continued increasing with absolutely zero mainstream discussion about preventing pedestrian deaths. It’s legal to have push bars and tow hitches (thus inhibiting crumple zones) with no purpose other than “protecting” your vehicle at the expense of lives.

Even ostensibly pedestrian friendly cities don’t have sufficient political willpower to hand street space over to other modes of transit at anything resembling a fast enough rate. Everything needs to sit in a “pilot” for two years before action is taken.

We should be asking “why not both?” but unfortunately NY construction costs are inflated so ridiculously we can’t even afford one let alone get politicians with a strong enough backbone to support these common sense projects that would alleviate strain on NYC housing stock.

Apple didn’t exactly do a speedy rollout of bike directions in their Maps app. I find it hard to blame Google here. Seems more like a symptom of our society to me.

This post screams classic Friday afternoon news dump to me. But at this point, it doesn't really matter. I'm beginning to grow very tired of Reddit. When I signed up almost 9 years ago, it felt like a community where I was surrounded by others who were genuinely curious, helpful, and smarter than me. Now it feels like a slightly better Facebook, even if you exclude the constantly interjected political comments. The HN community feels to me today what Reddit felt like 9 years ago.

Interesting. I don’t think it’s a big enough annoyance for me to install yet another extension. Moreover, since I use old Reddit on my phone, I’d still have to change it back.

Yes. It’s in the preferences section only when you’re logged in. I notice it as I use multiple accounts somewhat sporadically and it seems like when I log into one after a while it’s almost always back on new Reddit. I’m not alone in complaining about this - plenty of threads on Reddit mentioning this.

HN is popular within certain demographics and tends to have somewhat circular discussions as a result. As someone who works in finance in NYC, I know nobody else who reads it. I imagine if I worked in tech in Redwood City, I might think differently.

Reddit conveniently unchecks the “redirect me to old Reddit” button every ~6 months. Quite annoying. I’ve been using Reddit for ~8-9 years and it’s gotten palpably worse. I knew it was dying the first time I saw an emoji on there. Seems they want to go the way Digg did.
