My personal conclusion (YMMV), python is fast (and it has been) in all scenario and it can be speed up when is not, scaling it vertically or horizontally with appropriate solutions (even including low level accelerations).

Cog generates inline code, the compiler will still point to the code unlike the preprocessor.

Or one’s been programming in C++ where they use an ungodly amount of preprocessor and templates.. cog solves that elegantly.
