For me, it was the 'magic'. Ruby seemed to have a lot of 'magic' working behind the scenes - which confused the hell out of me when I tried to figure out how something worked a particular way. Python on the other hand has far less magic and more transparency - magic replaced with a transparent box showcasing the logic... Just made it easier for me to wrap my mind around...
This is a pretty broad guideline - One that, if applied at face value, would dramatically decrease the quality of this board. Although I see a fair share of Reddit bashing from time to time on HN when discussing this degrade of quality in discussion, I have to admit that I like Reddit. This said, there is already a Reddit and I think most of the HN community would agree that HN is not supposed to be 'that type of board'.
I feel pretty safe in saying that one's intellectual curiosity can often times serve to be another person's bird cage lining. Further, is there anyone here claiming that posts pertaining to MJ's death are actually intellectually stimulating? Sure, the posts of the Internet slowing MAY be relevant - but only because of their relation to networking and Internet trends and traffic patterns... not because a pop singer died...
Although I could not agree more, one caveat here - hosting a "server" of nearly any flavor is a violation of most current ISP's TOS. I know we do it and get away with it (and its one of the dumbest rules ever), but they will terminate your service from time to time until you agree to obey - it has happened to me twice over a simple HTML/Javascript web server.
...And it is making the "true Windows replacement" approach - again (so many)... Gimp=Photoshop, OpenOffice=MSOffice, yadda-yadda-yadda... Need a great Linux desktop setup? Find distro with the best package manager and packages for your needs and install the software to suit what you are trying to get done... Need to edit a Word doc? Install Abiword or OpenOffice... Need to edit a JPG? Gimp.

I have had a handful of domains through 1and1 - so far, so good. No problems. Admin interface is friendly. Notices via email for all renewals. Don't know how that compares, but I have been happy. Heck, I tossed their referral link on my VERY low traffic sites and each domain has consistently paid for it's self.
Agreed - I use it nearly daily. I can honestly say it is one of the few apps that has proven so invaluable to me that I have been inspired to tell countless friends, associates and customers about it...
Very good argument - unfortunately, it likely is non-applicable in many (if not most) of the universities in the U.S.
From my personal experience, I found mediocre teachers who primarily seemed to be present for class for attendance - like many of their students. I had hoped that this appearance was superficial, and that in reality they wanted a student to inquire and ask for assistance beyond the covered material, but alas, this was not the case. In reality, my questions were usually greeted with being "irrelevant to the course material and not related to what we were covering" - even when the material was clearly an extension of the course material and was presented by me as a means to engage the teacher and hopefully learn more than how to write a C++ application to parse a txt file...
This said, my Java and ASM teachers were great and did welcome this interaction - but the majority of my professors seemed disinterested (at best) in talking about anything other than the verbatim script out of the book.
But that was just my school - mileage varies.
Being one of the college students who deceived themselves, I have to admit that I could not have put it better myself. Is it my own dumb fault? Yes, it is. I was an adult and like to think that I was smart enough to have made the decision under my own merit. Should I have researched the reality of post-graduation life more? Yes, again. It is very true that they sale you the dream of 80k - had I only known then that college wasn't a requirement for realising the dream, I could have saved 40k...
I am confused - how do robotic prosthetic limbs relate to faith or any deity? Furthermore, in the possibility that there is a god, what does furthering human knowledge and easing human suffering have to do with knowing or becoming god? Just kinda confused on this sentiment.
All in all, I think that the limb appears to be promising - their website (http://www.touchbionics.com/index.php) has some interesting literature and examples of the product. What will be interesting is when the feedback from these devices more accurately mimics "real feeling".
Yup. Short of an official supported API, we are pretty much tied on utilizing CL's data. While screen scraping CL is easy and can yield fully utilizable data for an outside application, the application will be doomed to failure (financially, at least) because it will always be arguable in court that your application is worthless and that it is their proprietary data that ultimately holds the value of your application.

Agreed. As a long time CL user, I have thought the exact same thing. Short of API functionality and extensibility, I know of numerous scraper/mashup applications that utilize CL data. Unfortunately, this does fall far short of API extensibility and likely leads to liability in concerns to "stealing" CL's data - I would be apprehensive about investing 'too much' on any project that relies on scraping as chances are that the project will be killed by CL before reaching the critical user mass of "success".
