- C/C++ developers for RDBMS engine development
- Java developers for special-purpose (financial) query engine development

I expect an increasingly larger C/C++ codebase to be ported with emscripten and asm.js with decent enough performance (especially dev tools). Currently C++ code compiled with emscripten runs in Firefox only 1.5x slower than natively compiled code [1].

BI solutions help companies retreive and analyze key data related to their business processes, and generate reports. What you do is implement and deploy custom solutions for your client's specific needs, and you make use of a BI suite or another (libraries and tools to handle data and dynamically generate reports or other forms of data visualization). There are proprietary BI suites, most notable form Oracle, SAP, Salesforce, and there are also open source suites, like JasperReports, Pentaho, SpagoBI (I reccomend you JasperReports). I don't develop business software myself, but my company offers consultancy and implementations of such solutions.
It is really an ad, no plugin or other trick. I also noticed this two days ago, I have a screenshot with it on my blog (link is on my profile, not posting it here). After a while the ad seems to be disappearing for good.
Since you have a background in economics you may go for business intelligence or financial software. For BI you need knowledge of databases (SQL, stored procedures, data warehousing), Java EE, familiarity with BI suites (Oracle, SAP). For financial software it's a long term commitment, you need to master advanced data structures and algorithms (tree, graphs, networks, linear programming, dynamic programming, numeric methods), some AI topics (data mining, machine learning), statistical modelling (the math behind it, R language), low level programming (C/C++, memory management, multithreading, interprocess communication). The reward is proportional to the effort (higher entry barrier means bigger gain), so you can do CMS tweakings for lower and fragmented returns, or work on more serious systems for higher paychecks and job security.
You did some research and concluded that your idea is promising. But do you trust your idea? If so, build your product, and stick with it, and push it for as long as you can. It may not take off right away, so you need to have a great deal of optimism to keep things moving. Maybe your product will eventually become successful, or maybe it will bring you other profitable opportunities.
So, do you trust your idea, or you need others to convince you to trust it?
My point is that if you don't fully believe in the potential of your product or idea you're gonna have a hard time.
You are right about the unconventional ideas. But investors must feel confortable with the people they invest in too, not only with their ideas. It's a relation based on trust, so they are looking for certain traits. This may explain why you perceived little diversity in personality types.
Graphs show that the drop started on Monday morning. On Friday afternoon a piece of news appeared that LivingSocial is about to raise a $200M round to strengthen its position as a competitor for Groupon. More recent rumours say that the round may actually be much higher than that, backed by some big names, and the cash would go to the company and not to investors (http://blogs.wsj.com/venturecapital/2011/11/22/livingsocial-...). So this may have influenced investors mood to some degree, maybe enough to make a spark so to speak, which probably was the opportunity that short sellers were expecting to start making big bets. It's just an assumption, but it could make sense.
According to an earlier Reuters analysis, Groupon shares are very attractive for shorting because the company is losing money, had issues with accounting, unproven business model, and may face stiff competition (http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/11/14/us-groupon-shortse...).
