It’s totally possible that manipulating the sails and rigging is motorized and automated on these ships. Would be interested to see a demo of the operation of this ship.

In the article it states they make 5 trips per year.

And this is how you get skynet haha. Seriously though this is very cool and an astounding technical achievement, albeit kinda scary and a bit dystopian. :/

Yes it can take a bit of playing around with the settings which are very buried to get things to work optimally. I’ve never had to edit the registry for this tho. However by chance I have not had this hdmi/displayport issue since I have multiple monitors and a mix of the two standards.

Bump to say that I have also had a much better experience with rdp on Debian 12 using freerdp. The amount of settings I am able to tweak means that my experience is 100% better using Linux connected to a windows machine vs Microsoft rdp to windows. Better scaling, better frame time, better color quality, no audio issues. I am even able to watch a YouTube video or something without noticing the difference most of the time. And this is with 2 1440p screens and 2 1080p screens in multi monitor mode, full resolution, 24bpp. Using windows rdp I get color blocking, audio fuzziness and terrible lag, especially if I try to go multi monitor.

It’s actually a fork of that project!

I’m this way as well. Though I wonder to what degree this type of mental imagery ranges from person to person. To use a simple example, like placing something somewhere in my house and imagining how it would look. It’s not like I can actually see it at that location when I look there. It’s more like I am superimposing my imagination on the visual input from my eyes to create a composite representation of what it might look like. So it’s two systems working together, not like a full real image, if that makes sense. I see it in my “mind’s eye”. Curious to know what other people experience in this situation.

I second this but I will say that the complexity demon lives in the reflect package.

Issues like this typically boil down to management. If they had a driven forward thinking manager who could deliver value early and impress their superiors, then they could have leverage to make change in the organization and push for more devs, a change in philosophy or push for more resources for the software arm. These things take time though of course.

Am I the only one imagining this kind of tech eventually turning into something like an electron gun. Sort-of like a real world version of the laser guns in sci-fi? I can imagine basically having a bank of these in a gun where you can shoot a burst and then it would over heat like a plasma gun in warhammer 40k, and you have to wait a bit. Or maybe you can get around this by having some kind of liquid nitrogen cooling system. Of course this could also be used in industry, as a replacement for plasma torches for example. Your only “fuel” would be electricity and you could recirculate the liquid nitrogen into some kind of condenser (compressor?) to be reused. Maybe it could even be used in propulsion in small cube satellites. Obviously right now the tech is in the very early days but these are just some things I can imagine could be possible as the technology matures.

Ah a new standard! Perfect! Everyone will adopt this as clearly it is better and there’s no reason not to right? … right?

The way I have it set up in my use case is that if you click on the equation it switches to a brief description of what the equation is doing. Pretty useful for quickly parsing it for someone unfamiliar.

Speakers are probably a good option but if you want to achieve a similar effect, in my experience open backed headphones like the ones made by Senheiser have definitely decreased my tinnitus. I found that with my old closed backed headphones my ears would get watery and occasionally one of my ears would get very irritated and sensitive to sound, which made the tinnitus much louder. Since switching I have not had another instance of this.

I think there are a number of factors at play here. I think a large part of it is that having children is extremely expensive. You need a bigger house, a bigger car, need to buy more food and then pay for their entire life for about 20 years or so. Given the cost to just sustain one’s self these days I think it is not a surprise that many people opt to have fewer children or none at all.

I think that also there is a culture shift that has taken place, there is less pressure to create a traditional family unit. More virtue is given to autonomy and following your dreams than settling down. In addition to this, contraceptives such as IUDs have become much more socially accepted, so less people are getting pregnant. Naturally all of this adds up to a drastically lower average fertility rate than a few decades ago.

In summary, it’s a bit of culture shift, economics and science which has led us to where we are today. The result is that in the next few decades we will either have to start having more children again, or rework the way our economies are structured to account for less growth in exchange for a focus on sustainability and providing a livable wage for all people. Its likely that if we keep with the status quo, quality of life will keep going down until we hit a breaking point.

I think it’s hilarious that there could be a space race to get to a golf ball sized invisible object. I see the importance, but at the same time you must admit from a layman’s perspective it’s kinda comical.
