Shopify is massive. It has grown to a small collection of specialized services but the monolith is still the main backend and the traffic is database heavy and transactional, it’s not just dumb cache reads.

Tens of millions RPMs is the baseline and there’s massive, massive spikes for Black Friday or high profile events

It’s not Facebook/Google/Netflix traffic but it’s up there. Language is very rarely the bottleneck that people think it is

You’re welcome to do whatever you want at your own expense.

If you can’t function to a degree where society needs to clothe you, feed you and house you; it should come with strings attached. Resources are finite and “the vulnerable population” isn’t entitled to everyone’s else labor.

Maybe they would have been even more successful if they went to college?

The fact that someone succeeded without going to college says something good about them but it doesn’t necessarily follow that colleges are bad or that they’ve succeeded because they didn’t go to college.

Why is that a problem? If you can’t find black people to hire, it means black people are not having problems finding employment.

Why do we expect the population to perfectly segment itself in such a way that every workplace has the correct percentage relative to some interpretation of the population?

This idea that black people are needed to provide some sort of black perspective on every team is so weird to me. You’re not your race and the type of black people who are qualified to work in top tier tech companies have more in common with the upper classes and college elites than they have with the stereotypical inner-city poor kid raised by a single mom.

I don’t think this is accurate (and it is not in my experience)

levels.fyi puts the median salary for _juniors_ at 180k and the 90th percentile at 230k. The data is obviously imperfect but on average it’s fairly accurate. My personal experience also aligns with this.

Senior is around 300-500k and Staff/Manager can get extremely silly.

Twitch has proven that millions of people are willing to pay 5$ or more* a month to support someone else for essentially no extra benefits

*Excluding the more expensive subscriptions, donations, “bits”

Rewards aside, credit card also offers things like extended warranty, travel insurance, chargeback protection. These things makes them invaluable to customers. I use my credit cards for everything because it’s strictly better than debit and it works everywhere.

Accepting credit cards is a net benefit for merchants, even accounting for fees due to increases in volume. This is just greed. They want access to the network without actually paying for the privilege.

It’s not entirely one-sided, customers do pay for the rewards: My 3 credit cards are costing me 1500$ per year in membership fees.
