Bluesky/ATProto is (for all that concerns non-developers) a Twitter clone. I think the nostalgia of pre-enschitifed socials is pushing us to try and recreate the experience but I don’t think it would work because it’s not 2010 anymore.

Mastodon/ActivityPub has a lot more to offer than mastodon.social but getting to that also means leaving the Twitter look and feel and folks realising they don’t have to follow trends set for them by influencers and big VC funded operations. If it’s really a social experience, it should have a people-first focus.

And it really is not about protocols - at the end of the day, email and RSS can also form a social network.

> for me as a developer is having the urge to code and not being able to access my remote

I think that's the moment when you choose to self host your whatever git wrapper. It really isn't that complicated to do and even allows for some fun (as in cheap and productive) setups where your forge is on your local network or really close to your region and you (maybe) only mirror or backup to a bigger system like Codeberg/GitHub.

In our case, we also use that as an opportunity to mirror OCI/package repositories for dependencies we use in our apps and during development so not only builds are faster but also we don't abuse free web endpoints with our CI/CD requests.

> the source of truth is the record in your PDS

> content-addressed and signed with your private key

Technically valid but also not required. ATProto works hard to present them as valuable or needed, like added value of sorts but:

- The need for signed content is niche to specific use-cases. Not sure even news outlets need this as long as they control their domain.

- The PDS is a funny contraption of protocols and technologies that are quite complex and probably can't (usefully) exist on their own outside the "atmosphere" ... even if you manage to set one up.

The question would be, why bother with all this complexity and layers when you can self-host your website anyway.

The added value of a PDS/ATProto is to participate in the social cloud of Bluesky. Without it, the entire thing is more of an engineering showcase than a useful tool.

I don’t think it does. ATProto is merely “managed storage for apps” by Bluesky and it’s quite opposing to POSSE - You rely on third parties entirely, not just for hosting but also access and moderation to your own content.

What you can and can’t do with your own content is also limited and managed by someone else. The entire premise that you can move your posts history etc, while technically true, is not compatible with the web (e.g. support for things like redirects, canonical urls being handled currently etc is again all outside of your control and a not a goal of Bluesky).

ATProto is in many ways like the custom HTML extensions Microsoft had in Internet Explorer to “make better user experience”.

For me one of the main points of POSSE is resilience. If the VCs behind Bluesky got tired of it tomorrow, all that would die is some links to your website. Your posts and content, RSS subscribers, people who linked or bookmarked your website etc - remain unaffected.

I think it’s no easy task to reform a city away from being car-centric. In my home town of Ghent (in Belgium), we’ve had several iterations of a traffic plan that gradually reduces the number of parking spaces, rises taxes and car related costs, makes streets one way or deprioritises cars (e.g. a car doesn’t have priority over a bike anymore) etc. It’s not easy but the city today is a lot more liveable than it was when all this started.

I think the spirit of that regulation is so you as the producer see this as an incentive to better manage production so there is no need to discard/burn 10% of everything.

The word “browser” in the title also tripped me to think about an actual browser

I can imagine for some it's quite a challenge to deviate from short-form shitposting they normally do and formulate thoughts in complete sentences for the LLMs.

I've had a chance to use Gleam for a few small components in production and I'm loving it. That's a very cool talk.

I think the parent is trying to say that whatever issues Italy may have internally, it's not up to Cloudflare to comment or enact solutions on their own.

What's ridiculous is that the subscription at 180€/month (excl. VAT) is already absurdly expensive for what you get. I doubt many would sign up for the per-API usage as it's just not sustainable pricing (as a user).

Have you noticed how Google search summaries have taken the shape of those annoying blogposts that take you through several “What is a computer program” explainers before answering the question?

I like the idea that you can follow cities and they appear in the timeline. Also knowing it's all just markdown - let's just say it's refreshing to have things that don't endeavour to operate on hyperscale.

> I wish I'd paid more attention to the *BSDs

Same! I've been trying to reduce complexities in my stack (e.g. Docker) and while systemd exists, I think the concept of "jails" or sandboxes is quite neat. I love tools that come with better out-of-the-box readiness.

I think the friction really comes from their "partners" like MasterCard who are so averse to adult related services. Paying for adult entertainment is not tabu in most of Europe, being able to transact cashless... would be a very welcome improvement and even lift some of that business out of the grey zone.
