At Disneyland, there are separate park entrance lanes that don't use facial recognition software. I like that I can opt-out passively there.

At TSA checkpoints at the airport, you have to actively ask to opt-out.

I'm always worried that actively opting-out puts you on a government list and there could be later, much larger ramifications, so I passively opt-in to blend in with the masses.

Honestly, I think on LinkedIn, I'm usually in doom-scrolling mode, whereas on HN, I'm more likely to read a post in-depth. I think it was smart to come here to reach out on multiple modalities!

I'm glad you're doing this. I am aware of _Incorruptible_ from seeing posts on LinkedIn, but from your description here, I now realize I'm going to love this book! I wasn't going to make time to check it out, but I will now!

Where does Apple fall on the Incorruptible spectrum? Is it covered in the book?

>I suspect it's not seen as a problem by providers because more lines generated means more tokens used and hence more billing put out on customers.

I have also grown skeptical of token usage in order to run up my bill! But since I feel like it takes me MORE effort to write LESS lines of code myself, I'd expect a quick and dirty AI-generated solution to be MORE lines of code and cost LESS to generate than a concise/elegant solution in LESS lines of code.

Connections is one of the greatest shows in television. The pilot episode is amazing, highlighting the problem with dependence on technology that we don't understand.

"Never have so many people understood so little about so much."

Even more true today.

Please, say more!

>I always look to staff up a project at the beginning as much as possible, looking for doing as much in parallel up-front as we can.

Ah, maybe this is what you think he would take issue with? Fair enough. Perhaps I should have said:

>I always look to staff up as much as is economically and organizationally optimal, to exploit all genuine parallelism opportunities, being careful not to overstaff.

As a software engineering manager, I always look to staff up a project at the beginning as much as possible, looking for doing as much in parallel up-front as we can. If some things take longer than expected, then I already have a team of engineers with all the context since the project kicked off that can help each other with any longer running tasks. An engineer that has completed a smaller chunk of work can help out with the items on the critical path, for example.

A similar story from the always hilarious Dave Barry! https://davebarry.substack.com/p/death-by-ai

Note: Dave Barry is not dead. He is, in fact, alive.

Kind of crazy this is so successful, considering it's hosted in a country where it's the norm for (so many, but not all) people to leave their bags of popcorn and cups of soda at their seats when they leave the movie theatre or ball game, under the assumption, "someone else will take care of it."

You literally cannot buy GitHub Copilot right now [1].

How many people in congress made the exact same bet on the exact same information, and for them it's "legal?"

I always loved the 5x6 Pixel font in this classic 90s PC game: https://covertaction.fandom.com/wiki/Cryptography_(Mini-Game...

The extra 1 pixel of height for the text in green, in particular, allowed for some cool "italic" styling, especially for letters like E, D, J, U, V

"The term [meat] is sometimes used in a more restrictive sense to mean the flesh of mammalian species (pigs, cattle, sheep, goats, etc.) raised and prepared for human consumption, to the exclusion of fish, other seafood, insects, poultry, or other animals."

Great article to read as I sit down at my work computer on a Sunday to do pre-work and prep to make the rest of the week go more smoothly.

It's kind of like at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic when some in the US were saying that the US government should just forgive mortgage payments so the landlords could forgive everyone's rent. Instead the US government gave businesses loans so they could pay their employees (even though they weren't able to work) so those employees could then pay their rent and buy food, etc. It was (perceived to be) better to inject the money into the system to keep the current system running, rather than turn off / forgive the major parts of the system.

> We can choose to be the last generation that spent its best hours under fluorescent lights, pretending this was the height of civilization.

Well, if the work under the fluorescent lights is what allowed us to end the era of jobs, then maybe it is "a" height of civilization?

Taking a break from studying for my interview in two days at a FANG company, I checked Hacker News and this article was at the top. I've been studying for this interview harder than any of the others in the past. I feel well-prepared, but there's always the luck factor. I hope this is a sign that this interview will be the one to work out!

Everyone's sensitivity to caffeine is different. For example, if I miss my one 8 oz. cup each morning, I have a massive headache by 1:15pm.

When work picks up, like a big project, I might increase my intake to a larger 12oz or 16 oz coffee per day, but then I'll end up sustaining that too long after the project ends.

After a while, I'll do a cold turkey reset to zero caffeine. It takes 4 days and about 800mg of Ibuprofen each day to make it through the headaches. Luckily no other withdrawal symptoms.

I have friends that only drink coffee on weekdays... I don't get how that can be done! For me, coffee is preventative medicine.

So much hyperbole that I thought the entire video was a spoof on the practice of making a Doom proof until about a minute in, where I asked aloud to an empty room, "Wait, this is real?"

Also, he forgot to credit the video itself, which has a really high production value! Kudos all around!
