Egypt is amazing if you have locals to show you around. If you wander up to the pyramids in your shorts with your camera…yeah, you might be swarmed a bit. Weird how economic collapse makes people kinda desperate. I had one of the most magical meals in a street that had been mostly taken over by one restaurant - all the bread baked in one shop, the meat all butchered there…just amazing. The people who I saw get scammed were, well, people who would get scammed in a lot of places without a Walmart.

I am currently in projects using lots of open source hardware and SBCs and I would argue the price increases on those have been even worse (if they are available at all) because those companies are competing for the same components but without the buying power of Apple. It’s a bloodbath out there.

The hostility is a result of a long reading of history. If you think Chinese leadership has forgotten European colonialism, you are mistaken. If you want to understand how deeply the maximalist mindset runs in Chinese culture, look up what the name of the country - zhongguo - means. I love Chinese culture, and lived there, but make no mistake about how clear eyed their leadership is about competition with western hegemony.

I’m looking forward to trying this currently Strix halo’s npu isn’t accessible if you’re running Linux, and previously I don’t think lemonade was either. If this opens up the npu that would be great! Resolute raccoon is adding npu support as well.

Honestly this is part of a macro trend of everyone outside the US scrambling to get off a US tech stack…these are going to be the longer term economic consequences for the country, as it is no longer seen as a safe option for any kind of data or service exposure.

This is very well put, and captures my feelings on it. I take it as disrespect that someone would have any expectation for me to read something they can’t be bothered to write. LinkedIn is a great example - my entire professional network is just spamming at this point, which drowns out others that DO put in any effort.

I played around with it, but the configuration seems bloated and finicky, and the permissions were concerning. It was a pain getting it to work with a local model, which is clearly an afterthought. I thought the WhatsApp interface was clever, and I plan on stealing that idea, but also exposes a pretty serious attack vector, and the thought of it running with any kind of exposure or permissions on a system with my Apple ID was a bit terrifying. A sandboxed version probably couldn’t do all the interesting things, but without sandboxing this thing could probably ruin your life. I promptly uninstalled it, but I did take a few ideas away.

My partner suffers from migraines and also suffered a traumatic brain injury in a car accident. I got her to try glp-1 based on some of the research I’d been reading…and it has been an absolute game changer.

Very predictable amount of snark being aimed at this, but to me it’s incredible that something of this complexity is even possible with a few hours of effort. It is irrelevant in this moment whether this has bugs or is useful to others; what it signals is pretty significant. In a year this kind of effort will be able to yield something even better.

I’m interested to hear people’s experiences using this as a virtual workspace/ work environment, as that’s what I would use it for. Having gotten rid of my studio during the pandemic, the idea of a great work area I can just “put on” is very appealing…but I wonder how good it would actually be for focused work. Anyone?

This feels like part of a western habit of cherry-picking from other traditions, and, in this case, not understanding the context we're pulling from. We see things like Zen as fun, playful and liberating, but miss the whole part of it that entails "killing the self". It's a practice of systematically disassembling what you thought you were until there is nothing left...and this is a process that is generally done in a highly structured, supervised way. It's telling that we just pluck out the practice and think it will let us deal with our shit so we can get more done at work. I say this from the context of having studied in Zen temples in Japan in my 20s, and having done myself real harm.
