I tried searching for what a "lifestyle fee" is and all I could find is references to "living wage fee" which is essentially a forced tip added to the bill.

A service charge for large groups though is understandable as they typically will require much more attention and work from waitstaff than the typical small dining party.

> It's on the luddites to demonstrate evidence of harm, if they want some use of technology banned.

But then we're told we can't put the genie back in the bottle, it's too late, so we just have to suck it up and deal with it.

There's nothing preventing us from taking a more measured approach to new technology other than choice.

Plenty of construction work takes place indoors as well. That said, the linked article isn't very clear on that aspect. It also mentions a minimum temperature of 16C in the UK which outdoors would be quite a lovely day, but rather cold for an office or other indoor workspace.

Your workplace in Florida has an interior temperature of 86F? This is about temperature in the workplace, not outside temperatures.

Most remotely modern interior spaces in Florida are going to be air conditioned so this is already not a problem in Florida.

I don’t think they’re implying the moors are responsible for the Bronze Age collapse, merely drawing parallels.

Most doctors and nurses are not overpaid.

Certain specialities probably are overpaid (orthopedics), but others like pediatricians or general practitioners usually aren’t.

And nurses!? From the nurses I know they are underpaid for what they deal with.

The ones making loads of many are willing to travel around the country and uproot their life once or more every year. Not exactly a lifestyle without its drawbacks.

The odds are stacked, but everyone still has free will and can choose to question what they’ve been told (especially what they’ve been told conflicts with what they can see with their own eyes).

Many choose ignorance because it’s comfortable.

Yes, that would help. Putting regulatory caps on the strength of alcoholic drinks would probably go a long way towards reducing harm across all of society.

Of course there will be bootleggers, but the benefits would probably outweigh any of the incidental drawbacks.

And I say this as someone who drinks. I would be fine with regulation like this and making a sacrifice of something small I enjoy if it meant greater good across society.

In many ways electricity is bad for society. In this particular case I think the benefits outweigh the costs. I do not the think the benefits of AI outweigh the costs.

A reflexive anti-AI Luddite attitude is the healthy default until there is overwhelming evidence otherwise.

We should be wary of all new technology until it’s proven to be a benefit to society.

You don’t even need to go that far. If they just expelled cheaters instead of trying to sweep it under the rug and ignore it that would go a long way.

It’s the focus that’s important. If you’re listening while doing other things, you’re not really focusing on it.

I bet some do, but not enough for anyone to ever make a commercial game that focuses on hyper-realistic, multiplayer space travel.

You don’t buy an Apple Watch for its battery life, you buy it for its many other features.

If battery life is important there are other much better options.

Well it’s definitely the best way to learn the language, if you’re motivated to do so.

If you want to learn a language, the absolute best thing you can do is to be completely immersed in it.

I’ve known some devs who were recent immigrants and did not speak much English. It wasn’t FAANG and not West coast so I don’t think they were making $200k but they got by and often paired with other devs who spoke their language and much better English.

Overall they were nice people and their English improved over time for the duration I knew them. It was a bit of a struggle to communicate sometimes but I didn’t mind it. Any time I felt frustrated about it I just thought about how they must be feeling, and it didn’t seem so bad anymore.

English is a pretty forgiving language.

We need to prevent the implementation of surveillance technologies that can be abused now, because later when they are weaponized against us we won’t be able to.

Some things are too dangerous to allow to exist, however reasonable and useful they might seem.

That may be true, but I fail to see how that justifies broad, warrantless surveillance. Could you elaborate?

Reading this made me remember why I stopped playing my Xbox One: never-ending updates. I never played it very frequently so I disabled the sleep mode so it wouldn’t just stay on in my media cabinet heating my house. But of course that meant any time I spontaneously felt like using it there were 10 minutes of updates to download, so I would get annoyed and just do something else. Oh it can also play movies? Sorry movie night is ruined thanks to 30 minutes of downloading and installing updates. Eventually I just never turned it on again because all it did was download and install updates.

It really just killed all my interest in it because I couldn’t just turn it on and play a game unless I let it stay on all the time wasting energy and downloading constant updates in the background.
