Imagine the article was about a right wing anti-trans activist. The criticism would be that the NYT was providing a platform to someone that doesn’t deserve it.

But this water witch is clearly a fraud. They are giving a platform to someone who does not deserve it because that are ripping off people. They are humanizing a fraudster.

Don’t read it then. The beauty of HN is how it breaks the echo chamber and introduces people like me to articles I never would have seen.

This particular one is shocking and sad, I probably won’t be able to sleep at night at his angering it is.

I know something who went bankrupt and got a divorce after flipping condos in chicsgo just before the housing bust. It works until it doesn’t and it’s usually catastrophic.

Some decisions aren’t mathematical. Sometimes it’s better to make a decision based on whether or not it makes sense for the family as opposed to dollars and sense.

If your wife wants to buy a place, I suggest finding a compromise to figure out how to make both parties happy.

My friend in DC said her HOA tried to ban her from getting solar panels but she pushed back using a similar law saying they can’t prevent her from getting solar, and the HOA shut up. It’s not just red states, Karens are ubiquitous.

Back in the early 90s a volcano erupted in the Philippines. In Canada where I grew up, late that summer in August, it was below freezing in the mornings. I had never encountered that before and was a direct result of the volcano.

This is the perfect way to cause complete mistrust in a movement. Look at what happened with covid and masks.

Thinking that controlling the narrative and lying for the “greater good” is corruption.

The militarization of the police in the US is a huge problem that is out of control. I was extremely disappointed that Obama didn’t not only rein in this militarization but effectively made it worse. We are now having to deal with a generation of cops who think they are GI Joe but don’t have the training. This is why so many unarmed people are getting shot by the cops, because they start their day thinking they are in Fallujah instead of Cleveland.

How much of this was farmed seafood? I have a friend right now who is planning on opening fish farms because he feels it will have less of an environmental impact.

Your understanding of “science” is absurd.

Yes, those creatures that died will be dead. When the environment changes and creatures are selected against, they will die out. This is called the Theory of Natural Selection.

Does it suck that it’s happening in situations like this heat wave? Yes.

Should we do whatever we can to stop our contribution to this? Absolutely.

Should we expect that it never should happen? No, otherwise dinosaurs would be roaming the Earth right now. There have been around 20 mass extinction events in the last 500M years.

Are we causing the next mass extinction event? Probably.

Will we be the cause of life to end on Earth? No. Even plastic breaks down and nuclear waste becomes harmless over a geological timeline.

Again, your understanding is pretty basic. Since when is the environment “stable”? Climate is always changing. To believe that the climate has to be stable in order for life to thrive is anti-science. Life will thrive. Even a nuclear catastrophe like Chernobyl and Fukushima hasn’t stopped life from taking over in time frames that scientists thought were impossible.

If the waters heat up are you saying that no creatures will ever survive? That’s anti-science.

There are creatures around the world that thrive in warmer waters. The space will be reclaimed by other creatures that can survive in that environment. To think otherwise goes against basic science.

It’s not “hot season”. It was a historically abnormal heat wave. I lived in Vancouver. You don’t normally see temperatures like that.

It doesn’t have to reproduce right away, that’s just unrealistic. But the larger amounts of free space will mean a land grab by the survivors. That’s how it works in nature.

If the climate changes and the water heats up then the ecosystem will be replaced by those animals that would survive in warmer water. That’s science.

It’s obviously horrible, but it also means that it will allow other creatures to grow to fill that space. It’s like a forest fire. Sure the devastation is bad but there’s also renewal afterwards. It’s not like it will remain barren forever.

Exactly. What is misinformation? What you define as misinformation right now could be information in a few months.

Entire discussions on things like ivermectin to treat covid were banned from YouTube as “misinformation”. Now some studies are coming out that might show that it’s not. At least it deserves a discussion but it has been censored as misinformation. So we lost an entire year of treating people around the world because SOMEONE deemed ivermectin misinformation??

What about the Wuhan lab origination? Last year that was derided as conspiracy theories and misinformation, but now it’s basically accepted as fact.

Who determines what is misinformation? What if Trump wins again or someone worse like Tom Cotton? And they set up a government panel that they decide is misinformation and companies like Google need to follow it? Who determines who is spreading misinformation now?

10 years ago a low fat diet was deemed “heart healthy”. Now that is classified as misinformation. Should low fat diets be censored by Google?

This is the problem. What you thought was misinformation is only really a few studies away from being flipped around.

The fact that Silicon Valley thrives without non-competes proves that they are unnecessary. It’s just a way for employers to put their claws in employees. If non-competes came with guaranteed 100% salary during the non-compete time, that would be more palatable.

We should just let all these forest fires burn themselves out at this point, regardless of how big it gets. The idea that people would sacrifice their lives to save structures in the face of the full force of nature is stupid.

Evacuate everyone in the area, divert firefighting resources to home the evacuees, and let it burn out. The silver lining is that the area won’t be hospitable for a large forest fire for a while.

How can they move the source code from open to closed source? They don’t own the contributions. I guess they hope the small contributors won’t mount a legal challenge or they will pay them off to transfer the rights?

Seems like a lot of effort for this. What is their ultimate end game? I’m not sure that this is worth all the money they have invested is it?

Large swathes of Silicon Valley in Mountain View are super fund sites because of the degreasers and firefighting chemicals they used at Moffett field. The chemicals went into the ground water and spread throughout the entire area from 101 to past Central Expressway.

Somehow I have a different App Store account than my iCloud account than my Apple ID account. And I have some music from my older App Store account that I don’t want to spend hours and possibly corrupt my newer App Store account with. It’s a big mess and honestly I can’t remember ever making a decision to use different accounts. It just kind of happened.
