Every law is politically motivated. "Freedom of Speech" is a politically motivated.

Before 2018 they were, and now they are listed as Title I information services. There is a bit of a court fight over the ability of state regulators to impose rules. I would imagine that they could be moved back if they cause trouble for politicians.

Private companies are regulated all the time. Look up the rules for any utility or communications company. They banned politicians, so that's going to get laws passed.

Welcome to the natural consequence of social networks becoming important to just do daily business. The phone companies, and other utilities, operate under strict rules. I do wonder how many and type of companies will become internet utilities?

For a certain crowd, I agree. The Saturday Evening Post covers spawned a homage set of covers with DC superheroes and villains that is very true to the original's spirit. I will say that in my youth the Byte covers were "better" because I didn't grow in a place that the SEP covers would invoke feelings of nostalgia or familiarity.

I loved the old Byte issues with the fun covers (I still want to buy prints of a couple like the AI and Smalltalk covers). This particular one was a bit funny because my mom thought it was more of that D&D crap[1]. Thinking about it, reading the DMG and articles about Lisp, might make me think she had a point.

1) I should point out that my parents never bought into that whole D&D is evil craze. Star Frontiers was "cute" though.

True, but to be honest, CyberPunk itself was a problematic RPG for a number of reasons. It was deadly beyond most RPGs (well, except for Call of Cthulhu), and one of the archetypes was called a Solo which didn't lend itself to group play. Maybe it is actually a game better suited to a video game.

On a side note, if you can get the CyberPunk 2020, it will give you a chuckle on the tech comparison with the real world. I think it fits into the Cassette Punk genre.

Ask any farmer when folks move into the area expecting some Disney version of farm country and get the reality of it. Its amazing how many complaints can be generated.

Uhm... CST6CDT has zone info just like America/Chicago or America/New_York. What am I missing?

Odd, I have been using CST6CDT on my OpenBSD servers. Is this not a normal construction?

People show up in new area because its better than where they left and decide to vote for the same politicians that screwed up their old area. Happens all the time as logic is hard.

or to put it like one of the folks here: "you peed in your pool and moved to ours, don't do that again"

Yeah, the lack of social interaction is a killer for a lot of child development. Kids on the spectrum whose primary problem is interaction skills are really getting screwed by the current situation.

Heck, older kids have problems. My brother has a large screen for the computer and his son did his first Zoom class and freaked out. The 30+ faces staring at him was just too much. My brother had to switch to the view that just shows the speaker. It was still a pain for the whole day. It's just not physical so it becomes watching a TV show for the whole day. There is something about the physical presence of others that makes things better.

Gen X in the USA. The Millennials got hosed, badly. Not only did their playgrounds get replaced with child-safe equipment that looks really unfun[1], they got a whole load of parental and school supervision over recess. Never mind the whole no going out without parents crud.

1) the 20' dome monkey bars I played on as a youth got tore down and replaced with a molded plastic installation to play on.

Beware of comparing the data with other countries as the definition for what looks like the same terms is hidden in the details. Infant mortality is one area where there are some fundamental differences in definition (yeah, this is a surprise). Guns are a far cry in danger from quite a lot of activities.

The CDC does an amazing job of gather stats on what kills people in the USA. https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/deaths.htm and those statistics have a section on child mortality.

Homicide isn't even in the top 10 ways to die in the US. The students are in more danger from drowning, by a wide margin, than any school shooting.

"Unless it's a difference in degree"

Let your kids play outside by themselves or walk to school, and get reported to Child Protective Services. It is very much a different world these days.

Well, if you report 24x7 hate and danger, scare the crap out of people, and report that there is danger behind every tree, then yes, childhoods are ruined. Things are getting safer and the only way you would know it is go look at the CDC stats.

Kids need time with their friends away from parents. I'm so glad I was able to grow up in the (sadly last) "be home for dinner, be back by dark" generation.
