Maybe give safe harbor to ransomware operators who target Russia in the same way that Russia gives safe harbor to ransomware operators as long as they don't operate domestically https://krebsonsecurity.com/2021/05/try-this-one-weird-trick...

Yes I think that's the idea and the reason why it's taking a while to set up. Maybe they'll take bitcoin? It will be a test of whether this can really be a backup form of payment against the will of states.

Can you share names? Asking for a friend ... Although if they are small companies, I would be wary of anecdata... The narrative sounds good but small companies are more likely than large companies to exhibit extreme behavior in any metric, and it's likely that there's some confirmation bias in reporting what works / doesn't work

Seems like every company in tech is losing engineers left and right at this point

Feelings of inadequacy aren't worth being had. If it's useful, remember that this sample here is extremely biased. I've seen a somewhat more random sample of my friends, all talented, skillful and diligent, roll the dice of going independent; seeing the outcomes range from dream success-story to serial failure, I have a different appreciation for the level of risk that you need to be comfortable with.

To all the folks answering basically "yes it's hard" I think the headline is a bit clickbaity but there are some interesting takeaways... To summarize, (a) yes it's harder than setting up Big Corp Mail, but (b) a lot of the horror stories are either old or secondhand, and (c) it's a lot less hard to set up than it used to be.

If the suggestion is, why not give it a try, one thing I feel is missed is, how hard is it not just to set up but to run over the long run, when the technology evolves and you have to keep up, and why would any IT manager or CIO want to gamble their careers on this?

Thanks for the references. So basically the bargain of the ID claim is that if someone's use wasn't fair, the penalty is relatively lenient vs what it could've been in court, but then the disadvantage is that you don't get a proper appeal when you consider something to be fair use?

Why blame YouTube? They're doing it at the request of the right holders, who would otherwise have a claim to pull the whole video down. They also provide an automated tool to scrub claimed music from already-uploaded videos (https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2902117?hl=en) You might say the music rights holders lack empathy though...
