If I saw that in any other context I would have assumed it was a low budget special effect--mostly due the spray of rainbow sparkles when the module separates from the base.

Words of Latin origin are identifiable at a glance, and homonymic collisions are thereby avoided

If I could change one thing about Duolingo, it would be to allow the user to turn off all the gamification completely. I don't care about fake internet gems, knowing how to speak Chinese (or whatever) is it's own reward, so stop wasting my time with bs!

Nevertheless, Duolingo is an amazing and convenient starting point for unlocking the learning of new languages.

Make your way through the entire course as fast as you can, while also listening to music, talking to people, talking to chatGPT, reading books, etc in the target language as soon as you can manage.

Protip: learn your 3rd language using your second as the language of instruction.

Thou and Thee are nominative and objective cases. Same for You and Ye.

The formality/informality distinction is between You/Ye and Thou/Thee.

Plural 2nd person used to formally address a single individual came to English from French, thanks to the Norman Conquest.

French, I think, inherited it from Latin, and the custom of addressing the emperor with the plural.

After a while it became rude to address people with the informal 2nd person singular.

By the time of the King James Bible, iirc, English had already switched to universal "you", and "thou" was brought back in order to indicate where the source text had used a singular versus a plural.

"What is thy bidding, my master" is therefore foreshadowing of later insubordination.

Tautologically, each student at a university who is a blood relative of a graduate of said university has a social network that shares a node with the university's formal network.

"Social capital" is a term of art in sociology meaning "the network of relationships within a particular society", in this case a university. Robert Putnam has written extensively about the empirical benefits of high social capital, which include efficient allocation of resources, lower stress, and prosocial behavior.

A newly admitted student whose social network shares 0 nodes with the university's formal network makes no initial contribution to the university's social connectedness within the universe of people formally affiliated with the university. Whereas the legacy student is already socially connected at the moment of admission.

Also, the presence of multigenerational participants in an institution help it to develop unique traditions and culture that improve it in ways that are hard to articulate and measure, which I will artlessly describe as the opposite of the feeling you get from going to the DMV to renew your driver's license.
