Off topic but it annoys me so much that Apple decided not to make the hands see-through as they pass the day window on the face. Like even the actual analog clocks do this with a little window on the hand?
I thought it pretty well established that auto on/off is bad for the engine, as is intermittently turning off some cylinders as some do. Is that wrong?
Well, this is plain old protectionism and typically you down the line realize you're falling behind the rest of the market as your domestic products are not subject to the same competition. This is how China fell behind last time, with its reckoning in the beginning of the 20th century. It's hysterical that they have decided on doing the same thing again. It's hysterical that the US has decided to do so as well.
Nobody gets promoted for building open-source software at corpos. It is allowed, at best, not condoned. So what manager is going to go for this? Let's dedicate our limited resources to gratuitous goodwill work. Carrer suicide, I expect. Unfortunately.
Why should it be? The world is more complex and nuanced than "Nazis bad". Yes, they were horrible and despicable. They still enacted some effective policies, and many of them were socialist in nature.
Well, that was an outcome of losing the world war, not their socialist policies. I'm not sure the two can be separated, maybe you could imagine the Nazis but without starting world wars.
I agree, we must look at disgusting things and understand them if we truly wish not to end up in the same place again. It's really sad to see I was flagged, downvoted, and somebody called me a white supremacist. Ironically exactly the kind of dogmatism that allows fascist ideology to take root.
Well, you certainly got a combative tone. I don't care if it's 8:45 or 9:45, it is what it is. You don't get more or fewer hours of sun, it's dark when you go to work, it's dark when you get home from work. With DST. Noon at noon is pretty much what the time zones are aiming for, yes.
> One example of this occurred circa 2013-08-30 on the canonical repository for the Fossil DVCS. In that event, file descriptor 2 (standard error) was being erroneously closed (by stunnel, we suspect) prior to sqlite3_open_v2() so that the file descriptor used for the repository database file was 2. Later, an application bug caused an assert() statement to emit an error message by invoking write(2,...). But since file descriptor 2 was now connected to a database file, the error message overwrote part of the database.
Kind of crazy that this is an issue in modern operating systems. There are just so many ways to avoid this obvious footgun of an API design. stdin/out/err should be reserved file descriptors. In fact, why reuse file descriptors at all? Just count up.
No, it is intended for a small band of places where the latitude is big enough to make winter and summer daytime length significantly different, but not so different that DST does nothing. In Sweden, with DST, the sunrise is at 4am in summer and 8am in winter. Just set it so noon is actually noon.
I can see the DST argument for people where the shift kinda sorta works out, but many places (like Anchorage!) it's completely unnecessary. I live in Sweden and it's just the twice annually "ah shit the clock moved overnight."
Interesting point about class signaling, but it doesn't explain Peppa Pig (or Bluey) showing a more healthy approach to teaching emotional regulation. The English certainly value that same kind of behavior after all.
Kids learn really fast that they can't just act out with their peers for fear of rejection by the group. It's extremely strong and parents need to teach the other half of it, dealing with negative emotions WITHOUT acting out. I feel like DT does a disservice here.
