Add some enterprise / pro feature aside from the open source offering perhaps. Sidekiq and Passenger did this and are very successful

Totally agree i think this can be doable but we just have to have enough customers for the product

Talk to people that already use it and find out where they had trouble then sell your expertise to fix the problem.

Yes. Users normally adapt or integrate your code into their own solution; let them know you could help them.
