Since we're on the topic of underhanded media manipulation, I'll just leave this here:
I saw this entry skyrocket its way to position #2 on the front page, and within minutes, despite have 130+ upvotes and 30+ comments within 1 hour it is now suddenly 11 pages down, at position 340 (as of this post). As you can see this submission does not have any remark from mods and is not marked "[Flagged]" or anything...
Which shows that the initial statement "all the people expelled for hate speech in EU could gain asylum in US" is false: expelling foreigners for breaking hte law is not persecution in itself, and of course pro-ISIS advocates would not be illegible for asylum in the US.
I suspect the GP had EU far right dudes in mind, but most such 'hate speech' is often basically "slander and/or harassment that happens to be also racist" and typically ends up with a fine: hardly 'persecution'. And even if we go from "all the people" to just "a handful of ideologues": why would the US say no to ISIS but yes to Nazis?
I find it a bit concerning that an article of this (low) caliber was found worthy of publication by the NYT. It's basically parroting a handful of talking points heard a thousand times before, it does not really address any of the arguments in favor of protecting privacy.
If it turns out to be gross negligence by Boeing, I wouldnt like to be the US taxpayer when this blows up and goes to court. Because the US gvt is not going to let Boeing go bankrupt, so guess who's gonna pay in the end b/c Boeing tried to save a few bucks.
Case in point about "a certain group's position", it seems that the underlying stance of "the gendered brain doesnt exist" is: difference equals inferiority. Which of course is both absurd and reactionary. Saying that there is no difference and gender/behaviour is 100% the result of social pressure basicly means that for example gays are also conditioned, so this "theory" actually agrees with nutcase things like gay conversion therapy.
Since you mention disposable income, if you can tolerate in-ear monitors I would suggest getting custom-fit silicone IEM. Used with even a very low level of music (or even some white noise generator) they dampen noise like nothing else in my experience. Successfully tested in a work environment with endless yammering, bleeping computer equipment, that mandatory 'shout-speaking' colleague, and even once a guy who let a 1U server running on his desk for a week for testing purposes (because why not).
The only down-side for me was that they are not as quick to pop on and off as regular headphones.
