In hindsight my comment at http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=765153 does appear trollish, but I assumed the bright sparks reading would have taken it in context. It was exactly the type of comment Dvorak would have made in defence of the accusation that he is a professional troll. Anyway, he has admitted this on video to Dave Winer, see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMQv0j29WHA. The fact that I was posting this comment in irony was obviously lost, though, on mustpax who said I should be civil.
As much as I admire what pg has done here with NH, I really can't be bothered writing to him to explain all this if his code doesn't have the charity to let me know when I'm wasting my time talking to myself.
In an ideal world it would force a benchmark that a government would be honoured to meet. In reality, a government will do whatever it decides is in its own best interest. Which could be anything from making an 'apology' for misdeeds of a past generation to aggressively stimulating the bigotry found in the present one.
The problem with an 'apology' from a government is it is unlikely to be sincere. How about we track down the individuals who persecuted Turing and force them to apologise? We can't, can we, because assuming they are all still alive, 'forcing' them to do so means their apology is insincere.
Instead of asking governments to pronounce faux apologies, why don't we we acknowledge what they do is often wrong and ask them to build checks and balances into their operation to prevent this sort of abuse? At the moment they seem to be eagerly dismantling these mechanisms.
An alternative to a physical monument on Earth is a device based off-planet, probably on the moon, that beams a laser movie to the site every few weeks. It could project a short film which shows humans digging at the site then dying gruesome deaths. This device has to survive, and operate autonomously for thousands of years, but I'm sure this would be possible if it was maintained by a self-repairing robot.
I find a good app helps... Papers for OS X is an excellent interface to repositories such as ArXiv, PubMed etc. There is also an iPhone version which will download articles direct over the air.
ImageMagick seems to be totally broken. I've tried MacPorts & recompiling the source, but not really making any progress. I had a few hiccups with libxml2 but these were fixed after uninstalling ImageMagick and nokogiri. Nokogiri reinstalls ok, ImageMagick won't.

Cute. To illustrate the sum of limits, however, I prefer a graphic with sum -> 1. Take an empty circle then add a chunk of shaded semicircle, then add one quarter, then add one eighth... you get the idea.
Seems to me there are more Reddit-type comments submitted lately. It is something I have been very conscious of, much stronger than a hunch or gut feeling. I'm curious as to why you tried to measure this - do you still suspect a drop in the mean quality of the HN clientele despite what the /classic page might suggest?
It looks incredible. I think Google are right to be concerned. Others should be too - take the mortgage example: it wouldn't be hard to integrate current deals on offer from mortgage providers.
One query I'd like to build is a TCO for a particular model of car based on running cost, service cost and the probability I will die in a crash which obviously limits my future earnings.

Tax isn't about raising money... its purpose is to instill fear and drain your mental energy so you are not equipped to compete with the bureaucratic entity that imposes tax on you.
I'm not one to break house rules, but sometimes it is necessary. So why did my comment get down voted? Assuming it wasn't a slip of the click etc you have to conclude it was a deliberate decision by someone who didn't _like_ what I said. I don't know what it was in my comment that gave offence to you, guy, but fact #1 is you shouldn't be in charge of our water supply. QED. :)
The problem is the definition of 'healthier, happier humans'. Who gets to decide? Some people would be keen ensure 'healthier, happier humans' == compliant slaves.
