> I have a well paying job now, and I am pretty sure I would throw my marriage into chaos if I told my wife I was leaving my job to pursue a start up.

This is a conversation you should have with your spouse. Many spouses go back to school or pursue a financially risky entrepreneurial path. The other spouse supports the family. I've also seen this blow up, as the fiancee/spouse that supported the partner gets dumped after shortly after success... If you do this, I strongly encourage you to offer your spouse a generous postnuptial agreement (i.e. more than CA family law defaults to.)

> The employees Business Insider spoke with said they would be covered retroactively only once the paperwork was finalized, which left them on the hook to pay upfront fees.

This seems like many responses on HN are over reacting. Employees are not on the hook for previously insured medical expenses.

Almost all medical offices are happy to work with patients if the situation is explained before hand. For example my HMO has printed signs at every intake counter reading “Can’t pay? Call this number to discuss payment options.”

This situation sucks, but it’s really not much different from forgetting your insurance number and needing the front desk to front you the copay or deductible.

I literally saw a driver operating erratically in stop and go traffic. As I attempted to pass I noticed they were reading a book and driving “hands free.” They were driving a Tesla, and presumably using Autopilot. I’m sure some people operate like they’re a test driver, but there’s also folks who don’t understand the basic functions of being a tester.

Based on videos and observed driving behavior, it seems the marketing and documentation for Autopilot is ineffective at communicating to drivers that Autopilot is basically advanced cruise control. If this is correct, it represents a systemic issue that should be investigated by the NTSB or NHTSA.

If Tesla, NTSB and NHTSA refuse to investigate, you could hire a lawyer who's willing to go after Tesla specifically. I've similarly been stonewalled by Lyft. Long story short, the driver was fiddling with the official Lyft app that sends notifications during revenue service when the driver caused a 3-car pile up.

Be careful, a lot car crash lawyers just want an easy pay day by hounding the insurance companies. Make sure your lawyer is on the same page as you.

I don’t know where in CA you were… But here in Oakland I have the option for 10G fiber (albeit the landlord only wired my actual apartment for 1G ethernet, but the fiber is like 50 feet from my door). Utilities are extremely low… Far lower than I had to deal with winter and summers in the US South. And at least so far, this year air quality hasn’t yet entered in to the toxic level.

We did mobilize fighter jets (albeit without missiles, so essentially if the pilots intercepted it’d likely be a suicide mission). Also after 9/11 people straying in to no fly zones over DC would be escorted out by fighters.

I don’t agree with OP, but what they were trying to say is they’re killing open source business models. They take a popular open source project, turn it into an AWS offering and then crush any SaaS/cloud ambitions of the open source developers.

Aren’t size 14 shoes on the long side of the tail? Amazon will always be better at that than a brick and mortar retailer.

Duolingo is great for producing a cursory introduction to a language. But yes, there is no substitute for immersion. For example I spent some time in Spain after learning the language basically on Duolingo. I’m sure I spoke like a 2 year old, but at least I wasn’t totally helpless (I was even able to give someone directions to the airport!). Contrast that with my experience in France where I barely knew anything, and felt totally out of place and awkward.

You’re right, I responded to the wrong comment.

This is why jobs like lifeguard or airport security frequently rotate workers during a shift.

The lottery gives players a moment to fantasize about what it’d be like to be rich. I see no difference to buying a beer for a few moments of entertainment.

Obviously people can overdo gambling, but the same goes for beer.

No one is being forced to take vaccines. It’s already announced there will be no federal vaccine passport, and many states are banning passports.

I think you missed an important part: the people. There’s LGBTQ+ culture, Latino culture, startup culture, etc. People like being around people like them. Unless other cities can recreate these agglomerations, SF will still be a destination for a lot of people.

It sounds like you need someone who you feel accountable to. You mentioned depression. I’m not sure if you mean clinical depression, or post-breakup blues. But either ways consider talking to a therapist [0]. If it turns out your mental health is fine, consider a career or life coach to help you meet your goals.

0: I can personally recommend TalkSpace. Fixing my anxiety and ADHD has made my work life nearly immeasurably better.

> bikes are far less likely to be found where left, and far more likely to be damaged, vandalised, and/or have components nicked.

I don't own a car anymore, but when I did I had countless break ins. Most times nothing was taken. Petty theft & vandalism is a problem here regardless of vehicle type.

I spent three years doing this in SF. You definitely want a backpack you can attach clip on lights (FWIW my setup was a Goruck bag with Blackburn lights). I've found drivers pay even less attention to skateboarders than bicyclists. The lights help a little.

> bikes require planning and strategy

What? I don't plan or strategize any more or less than someone getting in a car might think about the optimal rush hour route.

It's quite common to have both bundled together when voting on ballot measures. In the East Bay there was recently a proposition to expand public transport via a temporary increase in sales tax called measure BB.
