to add onto this, one of my entire classes at NYU "Covid and economic policy" we've literally just looked at science and how its effected the political and economic landscape. Yet, you say stuff like what you did here on hacker news and you get reported / flagged / greyed out. That is why I dont contribute here anymore, it's basically like reddit-lite
I would say that there is copious evidence of the effort by some to degrade the role of white men in society today, often simply in the name of diversity. The relegation of high achieving men is a hallmark of foundering societies.
I have a few questions out of curiosity:
what is your age? What is your income? and where do you live? A 35 year old making 350k in the bay area is not prone to the nihilistic struggle that fuels many young men
Everybody already knows this, so it has become a moot point. Nobody really cares, but they should. The deconstruction of the male's role in society will contribute to the downfall of the west, and that's coming from one of these mistrusting, nihilistic, 4chan contributing males
interactive brokers is really the best you're going to get. Its a low level API which is generally good. Terrible documentation, in fact the worst documentation I've ever seen on such a large project, but once you figure it out it'll give you all the functionality needed.
You realize that this strategy isn't going to work indefinitely? People like you will be blown out in the future. Sorry if that sounds awful, but it always astounds me how people think investment managers are tantamount to tea leaf readers, and that they've figured it out by simple dollar cost averaging. I just don't understand the mindset
Is there a UVP other than the decentralization? I ask because I've seen a lot of social networks in the decentralized space, yet none have offered something that say, facebook, does not.
You look at a place like Toronto or New York and see the amount of damage done. Airbnb has created an entirely new way to speculate in the housing market while skirting all sorts of consumer protections, taxes, and local laws. Frankly I’m starting to despise the company and can’t believe nothing has been done about this in more states
As someone currently going through Airbnb hell, I’m really annoyed because on one hand a short term rental market is so necessary for so many people. On the other hand I despise Airbnb for enabling the following scenario: I rent an Airbnb in the Toronto suburbs, there is WiFi advertised, as a remote dev my livelihood depended on it. I get to the place, WiFi didn’t work, and there was zero bedding on my bed. I contact the host and he tells me he doesn’t speak English well (Chinese) but that I can just try fooling with the router. I do so. Another guest then proceeds to blame me for the broken WiFi and threatens my life (I literally have a picture of a note left addressing me on the router). I then call Airbnb saying I don’t feel safe. Airbnb legitimately sides with the host to my total shock. I sit there thinking what the hell and just eat the loss and rent the next place.
Airbnb is so supply constricted that it virtually always sides with the host. Compare that to NYC housing laws which are some of the most tenant friendly I could’ve written myself. So Airbnb screws individuals through various policies degrading consumer protection.
The world decided zero interest rates were good, so Chinese investors like the aforementioned buy places outright with minimal capital down and rent them out to local Canadians at a premium, driving rent and prices up. The result is that domestic markets have been brutalized and the rich have won in the zero rate economy, especially on housing.
I’ve had 8 Airbnb experiences and 4 turned out awful, the other four were fantastic. I used to think the company was amazing for building this new market now I’m completely jaded and feel bad for hoping this company rots

As someone who closely follows & respects Thiel and for his clarity of thought + entrepreneurial ability, how do these outlets get away with writing stuff like this while still maintaining an audience
Im not saying it is a great healthcare system, just that it isn't so bad as to be comparable to the soviet union. At any rate, life expectancy also seems like a strange way to measure the health care system. To measure the health of the general population sure, but we're talking about the healthcare system, and I don't think that those who actively destroy their bodies via drugs or junk food are giving us an accurate picture of the real efficacy of the system. That being said if you want to look at those deaths and say the healthcare system isn't doing enough for them - then fair enough. I would just look at something like decreasing life expectancy caused by suicides and opioids and say maybe this has something to do with wealth inequality rather than the efficacy of our healthcare.
I hear talk of the end of the American empire often, but I see issues like healthcare and education as superfluous in the face of a few underlying trends that provide the basis for another American century.
Healthcare reform is something we already have the levers to execute through government policy, and I believe it will happen during the next financial crisis along with entitlement reform.
On the other hand, there are certain trends that there are no obvious ways to reverse, namely demographic decline, geographic dominance, and technological innovation.
When you consider the decline of America in the face of China, for example, consider that China faces a far more serious demographic issue, and as Russia teaches us, it is almost impossible to grow economically during such a period. America's birth rate, however, is 1.8 births per woman with immigration putting the country into a healthy range.
Geographically, American is set up between the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic. If global warming does hit the arctic hard, we will have access to the arctic ocean via Alaska, whereas China and other regional super powers will not. In terms of energy, raw resources, and land America is also looking at self sufficiency for the next century to come.
Technologically, America draws on the best universities in the world, with cities that have external economies of scale so large that they will be hard to displace (ie SV, NYC, Boston). Not to mention we have an engrained culture that affirms those who experiment and forgives those who fail. In the technological sense I think America will succeed also.
Instead of looking at this as the end of America, I think people need to recognize that we face extraordinary problems, which we can overcome. In my own opinion, I think the highest order offence against the American people is American business co-opting the government, and as soon as we work this out, we will have a better ability to overcome issues of healthcare, education, etc.
Hey I tried out your app, but I don’t understand how to use it at all, in fact there’s no information really at all on what it is. Maybe you could consider making a small tutorial when you first sign up? Also feel free to email me if you want to talk about it, I’m also working on a social app. Was this built in react native?
You know, no one really talks about how Tesla's recent ride up has been partially driven by Chinese investment and entrance into the Chinese market. I wonder what it means and if any company is or ought to be above doing business in China, or if NBA, Apple, Blizzard style business should be expected going forward.
