[Speculation] This is interesting to me because Crohn’s Disease (and Inflammatory Bowel Disease in general) is known to respond to certain antibiotics such as Metronidazole and Ciprofloxacin [1]. Maybe a analogous action is at play here.
A “recitation” session is generally a regularly scheduled classroom session that is not led by the professor or lecturer but by a teaching assistant (TA). These are along the same lines as a “lab” sessions used alongside Chemistry or Physics lectures.
Just a tangential comment: we seem to inadvertently reuse names in Computer Science fairly often. For instance, there’s a somewhat recent SIGCOMM paper also called PISA [1]. Of course, in both the cases the name is a natural acronym and I don’t think anyone would be mistaking one for the other - this is just quite amusing to me!
You may have explored this already, but just in case you haven't: get checked for chronic/lifestyle diseases (diabetes, fibromyalgia, IBD/Crohn's, etc). Many of these sap out your energy chronically, making you feel gloomy/depressed/irritated in otherwise "normal" life-situations. Even if you can't cure these, being aware of them lets you set realistic expectations about your body's limits (like, for example, you might NEED 10 hours of sleep at all costs, limiting the time available for other activities).
Also don't forget that physical and mental health are closely interlinked such that if you aren't doing well physically, then your mental health will suffer and vice-versa.
I loved that talk, particularly his delivery and his use of humor. I may not agree with all the arguments he made on that particular topic (maybe because I read [1] a few weeks back...), but I'm quite sure this talk would've persuaded me to accept his arguments wholesale if I wasn't loosely familiar with the topic :)
Sorry, it too me a while to get around to reviewing the suggestions here. I just watched [1] and found Kate's style quite impressing. For instance, I loved the analogies she used (the weird complicated statue, the simple metal ball, the legos) to convey what she means by simplicity], as opposed to what people would normally think "simple code" would mean. I think this is not too different from how great presenters sometimes use cultural references, even memes, to tell a mini-story about their ideas.
Thanks for mentioning her - I'll definitely watch more of her talks.
