Has this ever been tested in court?

> So if you're visiting a site that isn't HSTS-preloaded - for example bitcoinknots.org - you'd better remember to type in the https:// explicitly, as that's your sole protection against getting MITMed.

>Tor Browser already comes with HTTPS Everywhere, NoScript, and other patches to protect your privacy and security.

> The most underrated skill to learn as an engineer is how to document. Fuck, someone please teach me how to write good documentation. Seriously, if there's any recommendations, I'd seriously pay for a course (like probably a lot of money, maybe 1k for a course if it guaranteed that I could write good docs.)

I agree but think it is more than just _documentation_: effectively communicating ideas through text was one of the most underrated skills in software engineering. I say "was" as I think there is much more focus on it now with remote work and video call fatigue becoming the norm for many.

What is a "clear skies" policy?

The fact that the response was outright hostile requires escalation either to HR or to this person's manager.

> He said it was my fault for being confused and to email him when I am.

That is definitely something I'd want on HR's radar if my manager said that to me. If you've ever worked in a large organization, this is how things tend to play out.

> Just last week I received an email from a manager saying "Never do (this), especially with US customers."

> Three days after that email I ran into (this) situation and emailed him asking what I am to do. He said frustratingly that I should do (this) since it wasn't a US customer.

> I emailed him both his quotes, the ones that said never do (this) and the one that said, of course, you should do (this). I pointed out that was confusing. He said it was my fault for being confused and to email him when I am.

> Middle management is often desperately trying to justify their job by creating purposeful confusion. I swear he's trying to trip me up looking for reasons to put marks on my record.

I would respond and cc their manager.

> I disagree. There is an implicit contract between website publishers and search engines that it’s ok to do this. The website can set nosnippet in robots if they want to not have the snippet in search results.

Who made this contract? I never signed one. If I came to your place of business and copied your content and provided it somewhere else, I would be infringing your copyright. Do I have to put up signs specifying that at my place of business? Why is this any different? My web content is not the property of someone else and by publishing my information that is in no way an implicit grant of the right to reproduce it.

There are varying degrees of privacy. Just because you share some information with some people doesn't mean you want to share all information with everyone.

That said, I agree that opaque salaries hurt only the employee as the other side of the market (employer) has full knowledge.
