No, the whole problem is a http server (ANY http server, serving ANY content) listening on port 80.

Once the tcp connection is accepted on port 80, "dumb" clients (like curl) can just come barging through the door shouting plaintext auth credentials without knocking first, and no http server can stop them from doing that (because that is how the http protocol works).

The only way to stop them from doing that is rejecting connections on port 80. (Dropping packets looks even more like service outage, which was mentioned.)

Let me state first, that I am an Elite fan too, I played Mostly Harmless for years on C64, where the visuals were sub-par (ugly wire graphics, low fps) and I LOVED it.

However, I am really surprised noone mentioned the 800lb gorilla in this space. If I felt like flying, modding, fighting spaceships, or trading or smuggling or pirating or flying with friends or making new friends (or followers, for that matter) or even building a space empire, then I'd reactivate my EVE Online account(s).

It is not entirely the same thing, but EVE is an incredibly elaborate game with insane depth, I do not see how one (even if his name is Braben) could successfully compete with it (for largely the same player base!) by raising $2M.

Well, this is an Ask HN thread and your answer boils down to "learn to avoid the sucky parts", which is good advice, but instead of further guidance on how to achieve this, the remainder of this post contains nothing but useless rants. (Useless for the OP, that is.)

Look at the top rated posts in the thread, all of them contain a ton of specific advice on avoiding the sucky parts.

This leads to the conclusion that big companies should not innovate this way, rather foster own startups (with major or exclusive ownership) which are not associated with the brand (at least initially, while in risky phase).

OTOH buying a successful startup in the same field may be the simpler way to go?
