If I sign up for a service but don't explicitly opt in to getting their newsletter, any marketing emails I get are spam, and flagged accordingly. The whole idea that I've implicitly opted in without being asked is nonsense.

I'd love someone to do a split ortholinear keyboard on a laptop. That'd probably push it to instant buy for me almost regardless of the rest of the specs etc.

We've had some success with recording meetings and using automated transcriptions, though we don't have any fresh out of college juniors now.

We use 1Password, which supports one time password generation, and you can use shared vaults to share credentials.

Ooh you are going to be so mad when you find out people use to talk about so something other than the purple vegetable...

A fair number of the hashicorp tools use ember already, including Nomad, Vault and Boundary. I think Boundary is newer, so they're likely still using it for new projects, though both Consul and Waypoint aren't using it based on the repos.

We use Nomad at $JOB and it's been great. We're a small startup with one senior site reliability engineer doing pretty much all the infra work and I (~CTO) chip in when I can be useful, though when we adopted Nomad it was just me working on infra.

I looked into Kubernetes (I haven't worked with it at all before) and there just seemed so much complexity to handle things I didn't need that it was too much to learn for the benefit. Once I found Nomad it was a lot simpler, but it has everything we need and that's stayed true as we've grown.

I'd definitely strongly recommend it if you're wanting an orchestration system and don't need the complexity Kubernetes brings.

> for engineers focus on quality, timeliness and skill.

So put that in the resume. Say how you delivered it better, faster or cheaper than the next candidate in the pile would have.

A bank I used until about 2018 (no idea if they've fixed this yet - I left) had an exactly 6 character password, and when you used telephone banking it just needed the 6 digits that corresponded to that word. Those 6 numbers also worked online, so at best they were turning all passwords into numbers before hashing them, ensuring there are less than 900000 different possible passwords, which was trivially easy to brute force in 2015, nevermind today.

I work for an insuretech startup and have been through a number of compliance gauntlets with large enterprise insurance companies. Appealing to NIST recommendations for why we don't auto-expire passwords every x days and don't require anything more complicated than at least 10 characters has worked on every occasion.

Others have given the much better answer, which is to leave and get a better job somewhere else but I saw the company is based in the UK so I wanted to mention the UK deemed employment rules which changed last year. In short, the company may be responsible for paying tax and NI deductions, where's they likely weren't before April 2021 - https://www.gov.uk/guidance/fee-payer-responsibilities-under....

To solve the redundancy problem I wonder if running something like Hashicorp's Nomad on a few raspberry pis split across some friends houses could work nicely. Each site gets hosted at multiple houses for redundancy but no one person needs multiple devices.

My car is also push start and I have to hold the fob in front of the start button for a short while before turning on the car if the fob battery is out.

I'm an Android user which has had Dvorak phone keyboards for years and I've used them since I switched to Dvorak on the desktop. I'm sure there's not the same benefit, but I can touch type on my phone pretty well, and I definitely can't do that with qwerty. It's probably just habit, but it's nice to have the option. I'll definitely be switching over my iPad keyboard.

I feel like I have to be missing something here. If the law is upheld why wouldn't sites just not allow access to their content in Texas? Stick the same front banner up that alcohol or porn sites have where you have to confirm you're over a certain age but this time it's confirming you're not in Texas, and carry on as normal.

I realise this isn't for everyone, but if you're changing sim often enough those sim card proddy tools fit nicely on keyrings. I fly from Canada to the UK roughly once a year to visit family and haven't felt like it's taking up excess space the rest of the year.

All (or at least most, though I didn't notice any missing that aren't super old - it has Morrowind on there) of the Bethesda games are available on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. It's more expensive but comes with the games so might be worth a look if you particularly like Bethesda's products.

No you're not. A fairy high proportion of the poplulation can afford the small luxury of $10 to take a company laptop to a coffeeshop and buy an overpriced drink. When we're talking about who the police are fighting crime for, rich is the 1-2%.
