I think that a Tesla phone makes strategic sense for Tesla and I think that it could do very well in the market. Tesla certainly has the engineering talent on the software and hardware side to make it happen.

I asked an Electronics engineer with a background in communication links. He told having a mobile phone connect to Starlink should be perfectly doable with the major caveat that it will only be for text messages as the data rate will be slow. As an example, the data rate of GPS satellites to any GPS receiver is only 50 bits per second. Connecting to a Starlink satellite will be faster than that and voice might de doable buts leads to other problems so it will most likely be just text messages. If it happens ... :)

However, there's no room for a Tesla Pi phone. Since iOS and android are 10-20 years ahead. It's impossible to compete against them, and even if tesla went with the android ecosystem they won't be able to compete with other Android manufacturers like Samsung in terms of price and quality. Not to mention there's no innovation left in smartphones that's why everyone is shifting to foldable phones where there's room for innovation.

Tesla will have no competing power in that segment, even Apple is at risk of being left behind. The only innovation in smartphones nowadays is in socs and Tesla has no experience in semiconductors let alone compete against the big sharks. So if Tesla can't make use of Starlink in their phones they will have nothing to offer, maybe they'll be able to make use of neural links but good luck in convincing people of putting chips in their heads except maybe people with disabilities.
